1) What/Who inspired you to start your fitness journey?

I had some serious issues with my heart in my mid 30's, and anything more than a brisk walk would leave me breathless, so I realised I needed to make some changes. I started with daily walks and was thinking about joining a gym when Flex Fitness opened in Green Island. Signed up as soon as the website went live, and I've been a member ever since.

2) What/Who is your current motivation?

Just want to stay as fit and healthy as I can for as long as possible!

3) Do you have a memorable fitness achievement or milestone that you are particularly proud of? What are the lessons you've learned from it?

My current streak is just over 1450 consecutive days at the gym, so I guess that counts? Don't know what I've learned from that though!

4) What message or motivation would you like to share with others to help them stay committed to their fitness goals at the club or who may be thinking about getting started at the gym?

Going to the gym doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. Ideally, we'd all like to give 100% every time we work out, but there are days when that just isn't possible. Rather than skipping a workout on one of those days, it's OK to do a workout at a lower intensity than usual. Maybe you walk on the treadmill instead of jogging, or lift lighter weights, or do fewer exercises. Just come in, and who knows? You might just surprise yourself

Of course, if you don't think you can exercise safely, you should postpone the workout until you know you can.

5) What is your favourite thing about Flex?

This is the only gym I've felt comfortable in, and that's down to the fantastic staff. They're always so friendly and supportive!

I wanted to be fit, healthy and lose some weight!

Inspiration from family, friends and staff at the gym!

Yes, I have lost 25kgs over a year! Working hard pays off!

4) What message or motivation would you like to share with others to help them stay committed to their fitness goals at the club or who may be thinking about getting started at the gym?
Never give up and keep going!

5) What is your favourite thing about Flex?
Expertise of the staff!

1) What/Who inspired you to start your fitness journey?
I had a stroke 5 years ago and had struggled with my weight, motivation, and energy since then. My left side was affected and recently I had been struggling with my balance and noticing the weakness in my left side was more apparent. I decided for my kids and for myself I needed to make changes.

2) What/Who is your current motivation?
My self - to feel better in myself, to promote body positivity to my daughter.

3) Do you have a memorable fitness achievement or milestone that you are particularly proud of? What are the lessons you've learned from it?
I started only being able to achieve 5 reps in lifting weights due to lack of strength and have been working hard and now I can do 3 sets of 12 reps. It has given me the motivation to keep turning up and doing the work.

4) What message or motivation would you like to share with others to help them stay committed to their fitness goals at the club or who may be thinking about getting started at the gym?
I was scared for years about the gym, being judged for not knowing what I was doing and not being accepted so took too long to start my journey - start now, talk to the trainers, and enjoy the results.

5) What is your favourite thing about Flex?
honestly the community feel - everyone says hello, no question is a dumb question, it’s convenient and the group fitness classes are great.

1️⃣ What/Who inspired you to start your fitness journey?
Oh my god .. you think I deserve to be a superstar!
I’m truly humbled.
I always thought member of the month was it was for the “young ones” who attend a lot more regularly than me, not that I’m old just over 60.
I’ve been a member for so many years now I couldn’t even tell you how long. I’ve always been physically active - Step Aerobics, Zumba, 10.0000 a day steps and then the gym workouts until my body said ‘enough’.

2️⃣ What/Who is your current motivation?
My Mum was morbidly obese, and her version of exercise was a walk to the letterbox. She had all the obesity related health conditions including diabetes and osteoarthritis. To be blunt - I didn’t want to end up like her.
Initially I just did my own thing then one day Alyssa persuaded me to have a session with Simon (my first PT .. see we’ve both been there a while) We had a good uniquely special program catered to my needs with regular reviews then Covid hit!


3️⃣ Do you have a memorable fitness achievement or milestone that you are particularly proud of? What are the lessons you've learned from it?
In 2015 I had my first knee replacement. 3 years later surgery on torn ligaments, I continued my twice weekly gym sessions. because I knew keeping active was the key to keeping well. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis set in, in my ‘good knee’ to the degree that even walking short distances became painful. I kept coming into the gym and working with my PT on strength and conditioning my core so I would be able to manage just normal walking activities we take for granted. I needed lots of nerve pain drugs and anti- inflammatory agents just to walk.
Last year I admitted defeat and had my second knee replaced 10 years later. My rehab was much harder despite the work I had done pre surgery, my physio communicated with Karen my PT and together they worked out a new program focusing on rebuilding my damaged ligaments and restoring my balance and strength. I’m now pain free and back to walking 10.000 steps daily.
Yesterday I carried 2x 8kg kettle bells walking with my head held high and legs straight no wobbles or balance issues doing a few circuits around the room. I didn’t even hesitate when Karen gave me them to carry. Walking without limping or hesitating carrying any sort of weight would have been beyond me a few months ago. Karen gently guides me into exercises and machines I’ve never tackled but always making sure I’m feeling ok about tackling something out of my comfort zone.

4️⃣ What message or motivation would you like to share with others to help them stay committed to their fitness goals at the club or who may be thinking about getting started at the gym?
For someone who’s thinking about joining the gym. Just do it! Not for anyone else but for them. You don’t have to become a “gym bunny” just be motivated to turn up as often as you can. Be realistic, life gets in the way but I find a good workout whether it’s cardio weights or strength and conditioning is a great way to manage fatigue and there’s a sense of achievement when you’ve been there and done it despite the “can’t be bothered” feeling that we all suffer from.

5️⃣ What is your favourite thing about Flex?
I love flex fitness. If I’m away for an even 3 weeks and haven’t swiped in I get an email just checking in to see how I am. They genuinely care about me. I always get, “Hi Angela how are you today” if the reception is staffed. I know it sounds stupid, but I wonder how they all know who I am. (probably my swipe card but I don’t care I love it) It’s those personal touches that make a difference for me. I’m so surprised to be selected, I never ever expected to see my name on the board
