Last night was my first Hamilton City Hawks athletics session at Porrit Stadium. It was fun trying different distances of sprinting.

Several of my past track guides were there including Daniel Mumby and Ben. Jahan was their too and the starter guy Chris was really helpful. But I had a weird sharp pain on my right hand side that hurt when I ran so I was slow. Lucky it was only a training night.

I also noticed a familiar looking guy in a green shirt dominating in the 400m and Mum asked his name. It turned out to be Sunil Fernandes-Ritchie.

Sunil holds almost all the NZ mens running records for T20 from the 800 m right up to the Marathon. When I first qualified as a para athlete and looked at the NZ records times, I was shocked at how many he held and how fast he ran. He said he broke them at 17 and they are so quick, 16 years later they still haven't been beaten 😱

He was a pretty cool dude and told me about his training, when he qualified for the Para worlds and the New Zealand team training camps he's been on. He also invited me to go running with him.

He then smoked me at the 800m, while saying encouraging things outloud, so I'm guessing it was an easy pace for him. So cool meeting the man behind the crazy fast times.

Thank you to everyone for the helpful advice, especially Max and Jack's Dad. I'm definitely going to try out what you suggested. My next event is the Live Well Waihi Beach Splash and Dash. It's twice as long this year apparently. Can't wait

🦅 NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS 🦅
Another fantastic National Road Relays competition for Team Hawks! 💙💛

The weather certainly didn’t play its part, but the vibes were high and the team spirit was even higher! 🌧️🔥

As always, the competition between our Hawks teams was ruthless, with everyone battling hard and leaving it all out on the course. 💪🏼

Proud of everyone who pulled on the Hawks singlet and represented our club! 🦅💙💛

🏃‍♂️💨 THE COOK 5K FUN RUN IS BACK! 🏃‍♀️💨

The Cook 5K Fun Run returned yesterday and we’re back every Tuesday night right through until the end of summer! ☀️

A huge thanks to Sandra and her team of volunteers for putting on another stellar event, with an awesome 99 attendees lining up for the first run of the season. 👏🏼

Congratulations to Tasman & Annie, our first winners of the season! 🏆

Annie was flying, finishing just 4 seconds off the women’s record! 🔥

Great to have the Cook 5K back — see you all next Tuesday! 🙌🏼
