The The Hamilton Anglers Club monthly meeting plans had an unfortunate last minute change due to illness. Fortunately Dyl Eyington aka Trout Fix Nz was able to wrangle at short notice Ben Londt aka Kiwi Fisher to help with the well attended Q&A evening. Both Dyl and Ben have extensive knowledge of our local waters, post regular videos on U Tube and answered questions with contagious enthusiasm. These guys fish more than most of us put together and doubled. You can always tell when something is enjoyable as time seems to disappear and in no time the evening was being wrapped up. Dyl and Ben didn’t hand out spot X’s but explained that we have a fantastic fishery right on our doorstep that is now open all year round except for a few places and that we should get out there, explore and make the most of it. Also, their opinion is that we have some of the best cicada fishing in the country and with the expected hot summer ahead get out there and slap a few big cicada patterns on the water.

We are delighted to announce that for our next meeting, on Monday 28th September, we have secured two extremely knowledgeable local anglers and will be facilitating a question and answer panel with them, so that you can get answers to key questions about fishing local waters.

Our two guests are :

George Brocklehurst who has already mentored and assisted many HAC members in their entry into fly fishing and tying. George has been fishing the Waikato streams and lakes for several decades and has a wealth of expertise as well as participating in a tagging program with Fish and Game, and featuring in their latest magazine. George likes nothing more than to help other anglers so come loaded with questions.

Dyl Eyington aka TroutfixNZ (https://www.troutfixnz.com/) is an Otorahonga based guide, tattoo artist and prominent YouTuber (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=troutfix+nz) who has been helping his clients fish the area for a very long time. He consistently posts outstanding content, covering both well-known and backcountry locations in the Waikato so is extremely well positioned to help us all.

As part of our continued partnership with Fish and Game, a dozen or so HAC anglers plus family members took part in a planting project on a local stream, helping improve bank retention. shading and ecology for the farmer.

The work was led by Bryce Regan following great prep work from Matt Osborne of Auckland/Waikato F&G all under the sponsorship of Council Chair Nigel Juby.

Following the introduction of a few hundred grasses, flax and other natives the group took part in a short setup clinic and demonstrations of both Euro and Indicator Nymphing before they spent the afternoon on the water bothering some of the local trout.

We will be returning in a few weeks to release the plants.

I know many of would have already seen the Fish & Game New Zealand Knowledge Hub so this is for those who haven’t yet, perhaps new to freshwater fishing or didn’t have a fishing license last year or are pondering taking up the sport yet are a bit overwhelmed. With a gentle introduction moving to what, where, when, how, the Knowledge Hub is a great resource to help start your fishing journey.

Anglers can fish everything from small spring creeks and backcountry streams through to large rivers, hydro canals, and lakes.

What is the collective noun for a group of Fly fishers? An exaggeration? A loop? A cast? A hackle? Anyway, 11 HAC members took part in the Annual Winter Trophy trip to Tūrangi last weekend. John Davidson has been running this trip longer than he can remember, I know that because I asked him and he couldn’t remember, perhaps 15-20 years is my guess. The trip targets the mighty Tongariro only and anyone who has been fishing this river lately has found the fishing tough due to a lack of recent freshes. The rain didn’t come hence the lack of fishy photos although a few of the new swing bridge build. John did catch a cracker but that was Friday and didn’t count for the competition on Saturday. Still, a number of fish were caught by those in the know and it’s always great getting away, switching off and chewing the fat with like minded souls.

The guest speaker at The Hamilton Anglers Club monthly meeting this coming Monday the 31st of August is Mike Davis is co-owner of Hunting & Fishing Rotorua and a New Zealand fly fishing legend. Well known for his back country exploits his roots are actually based on the technical small streams of the Waikato region. He's a passionate fly fisher with a lot of expert advice to offer. Mike is going to be talking all things fishing the Rotorua region. All welcome. From 7pm at the Waikato Sport Fishing Club (INC) club rooms Grantham St.
