The Hamilton Anglers Club

Red Fin Perch are well established in Lake Karapiro. Auckland Waikato Fish & Game would like to know how well spread and to what extent the Perch have taken hold. To help answer these questions The Hamilton Anglers Club are having a Perch Hunt this coming Sunday. Anyone who has a current Fish and Game sports fishing license is welcome to attend. If you don't have a license, a day license can be purchased from the F&G website and remember that kids under 12 licenses are free. Gold Clam are in the lake so familiarize yourself with the Check Clean Dry protocols. All the details of the day are in the attached photos.

Open Rivers Trip

Craig Fredericks’ ever popular “open rivers” trip was again well attended with a dozen HAC members participating and staying at TALTAC for two nights.
The format is two person teams with a so-called “expert” and a “novice” working together to catch fish on the Turangi river sytem with a scoring formula such that more points are awarded per fish for the beginner and the results are then multiplied, meaning no one other that Craig actually knows the winner !
With the rivers exceptionally low, the fishing was always going to be testing and, with the exception of those who got to the Hinemaiaia before the weekend crowds, takes were hard to come by.
In the end Pieter van Der Bijl who was paired with “expert” Charlie Friedlander netted 5 fish which, along with his partner’s 2, reaped the rewards of the algorithm compared with Nigel Juby and Peter Gault who had the same numbers but reversed.
Charlie Abrahams made a strong play for an Orange Blaster by having a damp end to his session on the Tong, which had otherwise been successful, by both filling up his waders and losing a rod tip on the rush back to the drying room !
All in all there was lots of sharing of information, learning and good banter as well as a nice dinner out at the Tongariro Bridge Motel.

Outstanding session tonight from Tauranga Guide Lucas Allen, with a ton of detail on how to approach the salty side of fly fishing.

The HAC next monthly meeting is on this coming Monday evening from 7pm. If you are interested in joining the HAC Junior and Families FB group, this meeting will be the first opportunity to meet in person. Come along and say hello, introduce yourself, have a cuppa and talk fishing. Now, the meetings are not everyone’s taste or convenience so you don’t have to stay for the duration. If you cannot attend the meeting and would like to join the group, DM the HAC so we can arrange an alternative. Again, due to the nature of this group in person introductions are a must.

The last HAC winter fly tying came to a feathery end on Monday evening. A Koura pattern was chosen to challenge the group which it did with some very varied results. A pattern with many more steps than any other tie of the program separated the digit dexterous from those who are digit awkward in the tying sense.

The HAC Lake Maraetai club trip on Saturday wasn’t without a splash of drama. One member arrived earlier than the organised time and while the majority were still receiving the mandatory debrief an SOS was received and emergency recovery actioned. On the positive, better to break down on a calm lake with help at hand than on the raging brine. Amazingly, said member had a spare boat which is not something that most of us carry in our back pockets. On to the fishing. Plenty of good strong browns around the 4lb mark were netted along with a number of smaller rainbows. All in all a good trip. Thanks to Charlie A for organising.

Monday evening’s fly tying was all about 2 dry fly patterns that should be in the fly box of Waikato anglers. Firstly, the Elk Hair Caddis which was the first time some tiers had used Elk/Deer hair. Loose wraps slowly tightening stops the hair splaying out and relegating your fly the reserves bench.
Next a foam beetle pattern in which there are many and varied. Thanks to Derek and his foam cutters for punching out a bunch of foam backs and Judy’s bird nursery for the feather bouquets.
