𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗗 𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗔𝗪 | 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿
New Zealand's new mandatory minimum passing-distance law is "a significant step forward in protecting people travelling on foot, by bicycle and on horseback." From this week (Thursday 1 October) motorists will be required to leave a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking a pedestrian, cyclist, horse rider or other vulnerable road user. This law is supported by a $300 infringement penalty. We are grateful to the many supporters from across the equestrian sector who have worked to achieve this outstanding result! 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 - 𝗠𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦

It seems Monica Spencer really knows how to pick them. Her latest success is Valkyrie with whom she won the 10th leg of the US Equestrian Open Eventing. The nine-year-old New Zealand warmblood mare – by Pennsylvania out of Vee (Voltaire II) – was the first horse bred by Aussie-based New Zealand showjumpers Jeremy and Sam Whale, who also broke her in.
Monica’s latest success with Molly, as the chestnut is known by her mates, was celebrated just as happily in the Southern Hemisphere by the breeders and her co-owner Ken Quigley, as it was by Monica and husband Spence, who are also co-owners.
The Kiwi combo finished the CCI4*-S at the Plantation Field International Horse Trials on a score of 47.1 penalty points. They were eighth after the dressage, added 1.6 time in the showjumping and catapulted to the lead after adding 11.2 time in the cross country.
Monica has amassed 90 points and currently sits in ninth place overall in the open, which has been won by Tamie Smith before the final.
Monica and Molly were 4th at an earlier leg of the Open in the CCI4*-S at Adamstown, Maryland, in June, in their first-ever 4* start. She’s had Molly since she was three and in May won the $50,000 arena eventing class at Devon.
“She’s always been super athletic and finds everything easy,” says Monica. “This year she has really switched on to what her job is and feels like she is enjoying it, We do think she could have the ability and speed needed to tackle a 5* but time will tell. We are in no rush to get her there.”
