When divorce becomes news you have to share
For the person saying it.
And the person hearing it.
Sometimes a little care in the conversation matters.
The Straits Times published a piece yesterday about sharing the news of a divorce with friends and family. It prompted a simple thought: these conversations can be difficult on both sides.
If you’re the one sharing, you don’t have to explain everything. You can say what has changed, ask for the privacy you need, and decide what is yours to share.
And if someone tells you they are separating, you don’t need to know the whole story to respond with care.
“Thank you for telling me.”
“I’m sorry you’re going through this.”
“How can I support you?”
Sometimes that is enough.
Divorce is already a difficult transition. The conversations around it don’t need to make it harder.
And for parents who are still considering divorce, there is another conversation worth having early: what do we want our children’s experience of this transition to be?
Family Forward™ is Amicus’ private advisory for parents considering divorce, helping families put their children’s stability and wellbeing at the centre of the decisions that follow.
