Alabaster YMCA

It's a shame that the Alabaster YMCA has to be affiliated with the other B'ham branches and can't just stand on their own. They are over-priced, over-worked, under-staffed, and wore-out. And now they can add another family name to the list of former YMCA members. The corporate BS that comes with being part of a "city-wide" YMCA membership isn't worth it. Too many better options in and around Alabaster to continue giving the Y my hard earned money. I will miss seeing some of the Alabaster Y staff and members but enough is enough. My advise to others who just want a place to exercise: Don't Choose the YMCA!!!!! Thanks

This is Jackson...or as the kids know him “Captain Jack”.
He is one of our lifeguards that is here almost everyday. If your 2nd grader has come to the YMCA for safety around water, they know Captain Jack. If your child has done summer camp here, they know Captain Jack. Even our KRP kids shown here, know Captain Jack. Captain Jack is one of those employees we wish we could clone. All members love him, he knows how to work the front desk, he is an amazing lifeguard, and his heart for these kids is special. Thank you Jackson for all your hard work. We wouldn’t be this great without you.

Kassie Williams 40 years old
Kassie was born with spina bifida. Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. When she was a baby, doctors told her mother that she would never walk in her lifetime. She said that her Mother told the doctors that they were wrong and her daughter WOULD walk. Growing up her parents tried to treat her as if she had no disability. They would enroll her in gymnastics and dance classes. Kassie would attend, but she was continually teased and taunted by other children because she was "different". Things never improved with the bullying as she grew into an adolescent. She not only was in a wheelchair dealing with spina bifida, but she was also fighting a battle with dyslexia. (Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words). Also called reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language. Kassie began to attend a special school were she received treatment for dyslexia.
Right before high school, Kassie wanted to surprise her mother that she could walk. She then ditched her wheelchair and began to use crutches to get around. Eventually she was able to walk on two feet. Her balance wasn't the best because she has no feeling in parts of her feet, so she was very wobbly.
As she began high school, even though she was walking, she was fighting severe depression. She was constantly teased, made fun of, called a freak by several people because of her handicap. She also became obese, because she looked to food as a comfort. Her depression skyrocketed to higher levels and she felt as if she had nothing left.

After living in a very dark place for several years, she saw a doctor who encouraged her to start a healthier lifestyle, and to change her habits. After a year of eating better foods, she joined the Alabaster YMCA in Jan of 2018. She started exercising by participating in water aerobics classes. Water aerobics then lead to Y Silver classes. Kassie began to notice her balance was getting more stable, and took the plunge to try Yoga. Now she is attending Yoga, Pound, TRX, and Y Strong Challenge Classes. She does bear crawls and burpees. She never thought that she would be doing the things that she is.

We asked her, What about the Y has helped her....
Her response, " I feel like I have a purpose. I have friends. I am excepted, flaws and all. Something I really have never had or experienced. I am not lonely anymore, I feel like I belong somewhere. Everyone has encouraged me, and no one has ever made me feel inadequate. People here don't care about any of my scars , they have helped me appreciate them more."

Personal Trainer, Group Ex Instructor, and Friend, Tracy Martin has been working with Kassie for several months says. " She never gives up, she is always ready for a challenge. I am going to push her to continue to thrive and survive." Tracy plans to continue more functional training with Kassie to continue to improve her stability, mobility, and core.

Kassie's next goal is to be able to hold a tree pose in yoga class.
