If you have Person A who’s in a 500 calorie deficit and is eating 2,000 calories a day but is burning 1,500 and Person B who’s also in a 500 calorie deficit but is eating 2,500 calories and burning 2,000 calories, who will lose more fat and building more muscle?

I used to carry tupperware with me to restaurants when going to eat out with my family…

After my mom passed away from stage 4 breast cancer, I became a health nut and if there was even a single ingredient that was sketchy in a food, I wouldn’t eat it…

I never ate out anymore because I didn’t know what they were putting in the food and everything I ate was prepped at home…

However, one day when I was out to eat with my family, I remember bringing 3 raw eggs with a cup of brown rice with me in a tupperware container (yes, you read that right 🤣straight up Rocky style 🥴) and all I can remember is my dad saying to me in our language “Ye tu kya kar raha hai yaar?”

Which pretty much translates to: “What the hell are you doing?!”

It was like I was snapped out of a trance and that was the last time I can remember bringing food with me out to a restaurant…

That was over 10 years ago and since then, there have been so many damaging food myths that I was able to debunk…

I used to think carbs, dairy and sugar made you gain fat due to the insulin spike even while working as a personal trainer!!

It wasn’t until I worked with my competition prep coach over 6 years ago that I learned actual real world application for nutrition and began to develop a healthy relationship with food that’s given me freedom to enjoy life with my family and friends while maintaining high levels of energy and a physique I’m proud of that I easily maintain year round whether it’s the holidays or traveling…

I share this because so many of us have been taught to live in a constant fat loss cycle, which not only begins to hurt the body metabolically (downregulating the amount of calories your body burns on a daily basis) but also fosters a VERY unhealthy relationship with food…

Food is fuel – yes BUT it’s also family, culture and enjoyment; it’s all of these things…

If your current nutrition plan doesn’t give you the freedom to eat all of the foods you want and is forcing you to follow fad diets such as low carb or intermittent fasting, then it’s time to snap out of the trance…

P.S.

Celebrating my sister and I’s birthday at Gazab, one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to on the LES!

Yeahhhh… 🤣

As Asians, we come from a culture of discipline so when I hear us saying things like “I lack discipline,” it doesn’t always add up.

Think about it, we hold some of the most prestigious jobs from a social standpoint whether it’s as engineers, doctors or lawyers.

Yet, somehow we begin to believe we’re undisciplined when it comes to our body and health.

Well what if it’s not a lack of discipline, what if the real issue is something instead?

That’s what I discuss in today’s video.

How Patel Went From Skinny Fat To A Flat Stomach & 15.3% Body Fat As A Vegetarian At 49 (now 50 years young!)

When Prativ came to me at the beginning of the new year, he had hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea due to a double chin…

Having moved to the U.S. over 20 years ago from India, he ballooned up from 145 lbs to 165 lbs…

And while he lost weight on his own before, it was always unsustainable and came back…

He tried fad diets like intermittent fasting, which only worked to a degree and he struggled with eating low amounts of protein as a vegetarian…

He even tried working with in-person trainers and did group fitness classes but didn’t get the results he wanted…

With his 50th birthday coming up in 2026 (it’s actually today!), he wanted to lose the 15 lbs so that he could get off the meds and get back down to his 2019 “fighting weight” at 150 lbs…

As a successful owner of two hotels out in the Bay Area, it was important for him to easily be able to keep up with the demands of his work, such as bending down to lift things without getting injured…

He started working out with the tonal at home but his main challenge remained the nutrition…

Growing up in a Gujarati household, his mom would make vegetarian meals such as mung ki dal and kichidi (IYKYK, especially with the winter rolling around 🤣)…

So when he came to the U.S. and began eating out at places like Chipotle or even Indian restaurants, he found himself slipping on the discipline of his diet…

The biggest question he’d have every night going home was “What are we going to eat today?”

He’d get serious for a bit and then fall off track…

So when he saw my post on Instagram, he decided to reach out and he hit his 12 month goal of 150 lbs in the first 90 days!

The biggest difference was teaching him our South-Asian Body Type Nutrition System that allowed him to strip off fat without giving up his favorite desi foods like papadum and morning chai with biscuits…

Then we got down to 15.3% body fat with a flat stomach right before his Summer trip to Switzerland with his family…

His blood pressure has normalized and has been consistently going strong for past 9 months!

Numbers DO lie… and here’s what doesn’t

On Saturday, I had a lactate threshold test that measures the point at which your body switches from burning fat as a fuel source (zones 1-2) to burning carbs as a fuel source (zones 3-6)

The reason it’s important to know this number is because it’s what helps you build your aerobic engine, which allows you to push higher efforts without fatiguing early

Building it is how I went from running a 6:21 mile to a 4:48 mile

However, over a month ago, I injured my Achilles running so I switched all of my cardio workouts to the bike

By my own estimate, I assumed my zone 2 was around a 123-134 bpm as compared to 133-142 bpm for running since it varies based on your activity

The lab this Saturday showed me that my zone 2 was at 83-95 bpm

So I biked at 95 bpm this morning for an hour, barely broke a sweat and didn’t even feel like I worked out

Even my Oura ring showed I was largely at zone 0-1 the whole time

There are a lot of factors that can skew the data such as the mask being too tight, which restricts breathing or even the muscular endurance in my legs giving out before my lungs do — artificially lowering my max heart rate to 149 bpm whereas I’ve seen it get as high as 182 bpm during my last HYROX a couple of weeks ago

Ironically, the most accurate way to measure if I’m actually in Zone 2 so that I can continue building my aerobic engine without running is through what’s known as an RPE Scale or my “rate of perceived exertion”

If I feel like I’m at a 4-5 / 10 effort, get into flow state and can peddle without it feeling too easy or too difficult, I’m in the sweet spot — usually around 123 bpm for me

This isn’t just unique to endurance training, numbers lie everywhere when it comes to fitness — the number on the scale, body fat %, caloric intake tracked, labs, etc.

What doesn’t lie is energy — your intuition about something and I have found that for this reason it’s equally important to pay attention to the qualitative data that the hard numbers simply cannot convey as to not get us off track by giving us a skewed data set

P.S.

Pricked the heck out of my index finger getting those blood samples (slide 4) 😂

A Pyrrhic victory.
