💙 27 Stories for 27 Years

Throughout August, we're celebrating 27 years of Dolphin Dive Center by sharing the people, places, and moments that have shaped our community. We hope these stories make you smile, spark a memory, or inspire your own adventure.

Today's Story 🤿 - “Sally’s”

Long before the first giant stride into Vortex Spring, there was one stop everyone made.

Breakfast.

For years, dive weekends began around the tables at Sally's Restaurant in Ponce de Leon. It wasn't fancy—but it became part of the tradition. Students fueled up, instructors reviewed the day's plan, friendships started over coffee, and the excitement built with every passing minute.

Before everyone carried a camera in their pocket, we always made sure to take an obligatory group photo. We'd gather outside for the photo before heading to Vortex to finish what we'd started back in the classroom and pool.

If you earned your Open Water certification with DDC during those years, there's a chance you're somewhere in one of these photos. 👀

Were you there? We'd love to know what year you got certified—or tag a dive buddy you recognize!

Today's Story 🤿 - "Call for a pizza!"

If you've ever taken our Diver Stress & Rescue course, you know it's one of the most rewarding—and memorable—classes we teach.

Here's one of our favorite stories from Erv Garrison:

"As part of our Stress & Rescue class training, we were instructed to simulate a diver emergency at the Lake Jocassee boat launch. Due to an unusual number of people at the launch—divers, kayakers, etc.—our instructor, Tim Bridgham, had us modify the usual vocal alert typically shouted as 'Call 911!' to 'Call for a Pizza!' We did as instructed. You can imagine the puzzled stares we got from the people at the launch. We didn't get a pizza. :-)"

😂 Sometimes rescue training requires a little creativity!

The Diver Stress & Rescue course is designed to prepare you for real-world emergencies, build your confidence, and make you a safer, more aware dive buddy. Along the way, there are always plenty of laughs—and stories you'll be telling for years to come.

Do you have a DDC story to share? Drop it in the comments, we'd love to hear it!

🎉 Happy Birthday, Van! 🎉

Today we're celebrating someone who has been an incredible part of the Dolphin Dive Center family for the past 10 years.

Whether you've taken an Open Water class with him, continued your training through Advanced Open Water, learned to dive with the UGA Scientific Diving program, or shared a boat ride and a laugh on one of our dive trips, chances are Van has had a hand in making your diving journey a little more confident, a little more fun, and a lot more memorable.

Over the years, he's worn just about every hat imaginable—store manager, instructor, mentor, problem solver, gear guru, road-trip companion, and friend. His dedication to our divers and to DDC is something we're grateful for every single day.

Another incredible weekend in the books! 🎉🤿

Our newest Open Water students absolutely crushed it in the classroom and pool, building the skills and confidence they'll take with them to their checkout dives. Every giant stride starts somewhere, and it's always exciting to watch that moment when everything begins to click.

Next stop: open water! 🌊 We can't wait to see these future divers complete their certifications.

Some decisions quietly change the course of your life.

Not because they seem extraordinary in the moment...

But because you have no idea where they'll lead.

Maybe to your first sea turtle.

Maybe to lifelong dive buddies.

Maybe to family vacations built around the ocean.

Maybe to confidence you didn't know you had.

Twenty-seven years ago, Dolphin Dive Center opened its doors.

Since then, we've watched thousands of people make one simple decision that became the beginning of countless adventures.

We don't know what diving will become for you.

But we do know this...

Every diver's story begins the same way.

They say yes.

If you've been thinking, "Maybe someday..."

Maybe this is your someday.

Our August Open Water class is now enrolling.

Some underwater encounters are unforgettable…

And some happen right at the surface. 🐬💙

There’s something magical about watching wild dolphins appear out of nowhere, effortlessly gliding through the water as if they’re inviting you to share the moment. Their curiosity, playfulness, and sheer joy are impossible not to smile at.

Whether you meet them underwater, from the shoreline, or alongside a boat, one thing is always true:

Any day that includes dolphins is a GREAT day. 🩵

Have you ever had a memorable dolphin encounter? We’d love to hear your story in the comments!

Congratulations to our newest certified scuba divers! 🎉🤿

This weekend's checkout dives at Lake Jocassee were packed with adventure, learning, and plenty of underwater memories. From shore dives to boat dives on the Chinese Junk wreck, our students put their skills to the test and officially earned their Open Water certifications. 🙌

We also had several divers working toward their Advanced Open Water certifications, along with a fantastic group of recreational divers who joined us to sharpen skills, build confidence, and add a few more dives to their logbooks.

One of the best parts of weekends like this is seeing divers at every stage of their journey supporting each other, sharing experiences, and having fun in the water together.

Please help us congratulate everyone on a great weekend of diving! 👏🌊

A little trip down memory lane... 💙🤿

Before moving to our current location in 2017, Dolphin Dive Center called 2594 Atlanta Highway home for nearly two decades. Thousands of Athens-area divers walked through those doors, sat in those classrooms, assembled their first set of scuba gear, and took the first steps toward adventures they still talk about today.

In fact, over 2,400 divers have earned certifications with DDC in the past 20 years alone. 🤯

If you're one of them, we'd love to hear from you!

📍 Were you certified at the old DDC location?
🌊 Where did you take your very first dive after certification?
🤿 What's your favorite scuba memory?

And if you've never tried scuba diving before, here's something to consider:

Every diver in these photos was once a beginner.

Before the dive trips, the coral reefs, the sea turtles, and the incredible underwater adventures, there was simply a person who decided to try something new.

So here's our question for everyone:

**When was the last time you did something for the first time?**

Tell us in the comments below, and if learning to dive has been on your bucket list, we'd love to help you take that first giant stride. 💙

A huge congratulations to all of the students who spent their weekend learning, growing, and stepping outside their comfort zones. 👏🤿

This weekend, our Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Try Scuba students all took another step on their diving journey. Some were learning the foundations of safe diving. Some were building new skills and confidence. And some were taking their very first breaths underwater.

Every certified diver you know started exactly where these students are now.

They started with curiosity.
They wondered if they could do it.
They felt a little nervous.
They took that first giant stride anyway.

And that's how the adventure begins.

To our students: we're proud of you. Learning to dive takes commitment, courage, and a willingness to try something new. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey.

And if you've been watching from the sidelines, wondering whether scuba diving might be for you, consider this your reminder that nobody starts as a diver. We all start as beginners.

One class. One breath. One giant stride at a time. 💙🌊
