Waterside Workshops engages youth and the community through hands-on learning in bicycle mechanics, Boat rentals are available Wednesday through Sunday, 12-5pm.

Waterside Workshops engages youth and the community through hands-on learning in bicycle mechanics, wooden boatbuilding, and outdoor education. Waterside is a safe place for youth to feel heard, gain confidence, develop work skills, and access the tools and resources needed to lead healthy, sustainable lives. Street Level Cycles is a full service bike shop that also serves as our bicycle education, repair, and reuse program. Working alongside skilled instructors, our youth interns learn professional bike repair by refurbishing used bicycles, which are distributed back to the community as affordable, sustainable transportation. Youth also help community members fix their own bicycles in our do-it-yourself Open Shop workspace. Our retail bike shop is open Wednesday through Sunday, 12-6pm, and our Open Shop hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12-6pm. Berkeley Boathouse fills the void left by the loss of woodworking classes in local high schools. In this program, youth work alongside our skilled instructors learning carpentry and traditional wooden boat building. When weather permits, interns take our fleet of boats paddling and sailing on the Berkeley Aquatic Park and San Francisco Bay. Youth interns and staff also provide boat rentals to the general public and help conduct field trips for groups of youth from partner organizations.

Spooky season at Waterside means cool, overcast days at Aquatic Park and of course, handmade wooden Jack-o-lanterns! 🎃

A warm fall day called for something cool!

Our GreenWorks interns whipped up and enjoyed a batch of homemade blueberry sorbet last week.

From the garden to the kitchen, every project is a chance to work as a team, try something new, and build skills that last.

We had a really nice time at the Berkeley Harvest Festival yesterday. It was great seeing everybody!!!

Salsa day with our GreenWorks interns! This week’s harvest: tomatillos, jalapeños & cilantro from the garden, plus garlic and onion, roasted up into a delicious salsa. Seed to salsa, real skills, real food.

GreenWorks is a paid youth internship at Waterside Workshops, part of our Climate Action Program in partnership with City of Berkeley YouthWorks.

DAF Day is tomorrow! But what is it?

DAF Day is a national day of giving for folks with donor-advised funds, and it’s happening this Thursday, October 8! A DAF is like a charitable savings account: you’ve already set the money aside for good, and now you get the fun part of deciding where it goes.

If you’ve got a DAF, we’d be so grateful if you’d send a little love Waterside’s way. It takes just a few clicks, and it helps keep our youth and community programs going strong. (Missed the day? No problem, you can give this way anytime!)

Give through your DAF: every.org/watersideworkshops (or link in bio)

Thank you for your support!

Every Community Open Shop, around 25 people come through our doors needing help getting their bikes safely back on the road. This program specifically helps our community get to work, school, and wherever else they need to go. Volunteer with Street Level Cycles this Saturday (or on a future Saturday!) from 12–6 PM and put your mechanic skills to work for your community.

Get started at https://watersideworkshops.org/volunteer or at the link in our bio.

THANK YOU, Waterside community!

Last Saturday’s Land & Sea Party was one for the books. We set out to raise $25,000 for our youth and community programs, and together we raised $25,621. Goal met!

To everyone who donated, sponsored, bid, gave to the auction, danced, and celebrated with us: THANK YOU. Every one of you made this night happen. And watching that sunset over our campus together? Pure magic.

A huge thank you to our sponsors and board, and to Erika Weissinger for her generous match!

And to the crew who made the magic happen:

Our staff, youth staff, and interns, who beautified the campus, led by the amazing Kati Bell, Ed.D.

Taraneh Arhamsadr, communications

Karen Bevels Custom Catering

Ian Patton and Betty Franks, bartenders

Rebecca Boblak, lighting and photo backdrop

James Boblak, sound

Steven and Jayden, our YouthWorks parking lot heroes

Nico Wright and Erica Priggen Wright, who came early, cleaned the Boatshop, and even got the ice!

Pilar Zuniga of Gorgeous and Green, for the beautiful flowers

Here’s to keeping our programs thriving. We couldn’t do it without you.
