Every angler knows that having the right tools aboard can make a big difference when the fish are biting. Danco Fishing Tools offers a lineup of fishing pliers, fillet knives, and other essential accessories designed for anglers who spend their time on the water.

From removing hooks and cutting fishing line to handling tackle and preparing the day’s catch, fishing pliers are among the most frequently used tools on any boat. Danco’s colorful designs, including bright green, blue, and turquoise finishes, also make its tools easy to spot in a crowded tackle station.

For anglers who bring home their catch, a dependable fishing knife is just as important. A sharp blade helps with cleaning fish, preparing bait, and handling the everyday cutting tasks that come with saltwater fishing. Protective sheaths and distinctive handle designs add practical touches for storage and use aboard a boat.

Whether you’re chasing snook in Southwest Florida, targeting grouper offshore, or spending a day pursuing tarpon, quality tools belong in every angler’s arsenal. Danco’s fishing knives and pliers offer anglers a range of options for outfitting their boats and tackle bags with equipment made for a life around saltwater.

Floats, Popping Corks and Bobbers: Simple Tools for SW Florida Fishing

From the mangrove shorelines of Pine Island Sound to the grass flats of Matlacha and the backwaters of Cape Coral, floats and bobbers remain some of the most effective tools in a Southwest Florida angler’s tackle box. They suspend bait at a specific depth, keep it above grass and snags, and provide a visual signal when a fish takes the bait.

Not all floats serve the same purpose. Traditional round bobbers work well for simple setups with live shrimp or small baitfish. Fixed floats stay at a set depth, while slip floats slide along the line, allowing anglers to fish deeper water without making casting difficult. Popping corks are especially popular in Florida’s inshore waters. A quick jerk creates a splash and popping sound that can attract hungry speckled trout, redfish and snook to live shrimp or soft-plastic lures.

Weighted and oval-shaped floats offer different advantages, helping anglers cast farther, handle wind and current, or keep bait positioned in the strike zone. Long, slender floats can also provide sensitive bite detection when fish are feeding cautiously.

Whether fishing a mangrove creek, a grass flat or an open-water channel, choosing the right float helps present bait naturally and makes it easier to detect a strike. In Southwest Florida, a simple piece of tackle can make the difference between watching the water and bringing home a memorable catch.

A New Hampshire fishing trip turned into a record-setting adventure when angler Brandon McGirl landed a massive 1,116-pound bluefin tuna off the state’s coast.

McGirl was fishing aboard the Out of Line, operated by Savage Charters and captained by Jamie Savage, during an overnight trip out of Rye Harbor. Conditions were rough, and after hours without much action, the crew was preparing to call it a night when the reels suddenly came alive.

The crew chased the powerful tuna for roughly a mile before finally getting the enormous fish under control. It was too large to bring aboard, so the crew slowly towed it back to the harbor. Only after lifting the fish from the water did they realize just how extraordinary their catch was.

At 1,116 pounds, the bluefin shattered New Hampshire's previous state record of 962 pounds, set in 2013. The new record is 154 pounds heavier.

McGirl said catching a 1,000-pound tuna had long been a dream. The fish will be sent to market and could eventually make its way to Japan, where giant bluefin tuna are highly valued. The tuna's tail will remain at the harbor as a trophy commemorating the remarkable catch.

The fish also came remarkably close to the U.S. record for bluefin tuna, a 1,143-pound giant caught in 1981. At just 27 pounds short, the New Hampshire catch ranks among the most impressive bluefin landed in U.S. waters.

Dog snapper and mangrove snapper are both members of the snapper family and can look similar, but there are several easy ways to tell them apart. The mangrove snapper is generally smaller and has a grayish, olive or reddish body with a distinctive dark line running through the eye. Its back and sides often show faint reddish or bronze coloration. Mangrove snapper are common around mangroves, docks, bridges, reefs and other structure.

The dog snapper is typically larger and has a more elongated body. One of its most noticeable features is a distinctive blue line below the eye, along with bluish markings on the face. Dog snapper also have prominent canine-like teeth, giving them their name. They are more commonly associated with offshore reefs, rocky areas and deeper structure. Both are aggressive predators and highly prized by Florida anglers.

The current Florida state record for the Mangrove snapper is 17-pounds caught off Port Canaveral. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, dog snapper are not currently eligible for an official state fishing record in Florida.
