Although good finishers are usually a little greedy, they do need to know how to combine with their teammates. They need to know how to find space, time runs, and get into good spots to get their shot off. Having been a goalkeeper, I was always around finishing practices, trying to find out what makes strikers tick. I was studying their art while trying to thwart them. I had to understand their thinking, and this was possibly the best lesson I could have learned when I became a coach. The choice of system depends on criteria including the types of players available, the formation used by the opponent, the tactical approach to a game, and the field conditions. What is most important is to use a system that fits the strengths of the players. A coach should get the best 11 players on the field, then find a system that meets their needs. But if pressed, I would say that the best system to use is generally the 4-4-2. The off-season resistance training program should be designed to develop the best possible football athlete, not an Olympic lifter, powerlifter, or bodybuilder. Although exercises from these other sports will be used in the program, they are programmed in a way to maximize the performance of the football athlete. The off-season program is a four-days-per-week split routine with the upper body trained on Monday and Thursday and the lower body trained on Tuesday and Friday. Wednesday is an off day.
