"Footwear is one of the simplest, yet most overlooked, components of fall prevention. The right shoes can improve stability, reduce fatigue, and increase confidence with everyday activities, while the wrong pair can quietly contribute to slips, trips, and falls.

"Whether you’re living with Parkinson’s disease, experiencing age-related changes, recovering from a stroke, or simply looking to remain active and independent, taking a closer look at your footwear is a worthwhile investment in your safety. "

The September 2026 Movement Snack Spotlight is…

Twist, Somersault, and Roll.

This is a good way to remember to move in all directions.

You can sit in your chair and twist.
You can stand up and twist.
You can get down on the ground and do a somersault.
You can roll on your bed,
or roll down a grassy hill.

Recognizing it is Fall Prevention Month, you can use a twist and roll to fall more safely.

What other ideas can you come up with?

Every month, I have a new movement snack suggestion for you. You can do just the current one or mix and match your favorites.

You can read the Movement Snack Spotlight article on my website to catch all the monthly snacks.

Fall prevention is important, but it isn’t everything. I don’t know anyone who has never fallen.

This Fall Prevention, Protection, and Recovery Class will address protection and recovery in addition to prevention so that you are better prepared.

Each hour-long class will open with discussion on the topic of the day, and a warmup. Then, class will have a block devoted to balance and skill drills, a block for strength building exercises, and a block for techniques for falling more safely. We will wrap up with gentle stretches, more discussion, handouts, and homework.

At the end of the series, you will have all the skills and techniques we have practiced, useful handouts, and two custom workouts that you can use to continue to build strength.

Tuesdays 1:00–2:00 p.m.
