The Fort Myers Karate family bows our heads in profound respect and sorrow at the passing of Master Chuzo Kotaka. We send our deepest condolences to his family and students. His immense legacy and spirit will live on forever.
Dear members of the karate community,
Today, the world of karate has lost one of its true masters.
Sensei Chuzo Kotaka was far more than a champion, instructor, or founder; he was a man of unwavering integrity who dedicated his life to preserving karate’s traditions while inspiring future generations. For over sixty years, he taught that karate is not about competition or rank, but about developing character, humility, discipline, and respect.
Within the Amateur Athletic Union, Sensei Kotaka’s influence was profound. As a respected leader and mentor during AAU Karate’s formative years, he helped build a foundation based on sportsmanship and mutual respect. His commitment significantly strengthened our program and its reputation as a premier youth organization in the United States.
Despite his international recognition, Sensei Kotaka’s greatest pride was his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he passed his values on to his children, George and Mari, who reflect his commitment to excellence and grace. Those who knew him personally will remember his technical brilliance alongside his kindness, quiet confidence, and genuine concern for others.
On behalf of the Amateur Athletic Union and the global karate community, we extend our deepest condolences to the Kotaka family, the International Karate Federation, and his many students and friends. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate an extraordinary life. His teachings live on in every instructor he mentored and every student who bows before stepping onto the mat.
The measure of a life is found in the lives touched and the legacy left behind. By that measure, Sensei Chuzo Kotaka lived a life of immense impact. May we honor him by continuing to lead with humility and integrity.
Rest in peace, Sensei Chuzo Kotaka. Your legacy will continue through your family, the AAU, and the countless lives you transformed. I will miss my dear friend.
Sincerely,
Jo Mirza
