Student Spotlight:

HopeMartha was born premature and has lived with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and seizure disorder since birth. She was unable to sit, crawl, turnover, stand, or even hold her head up. Equine therapy helped with her spinal stability and worked wonders for head control. When that was no longer available and when she no longer wanted to ride, we found Sheila doing water yoga. Because Sheila thinks outside the box, she agreed to work with HopeMartha in the water. This helped relax HopeMartha's muscles and simultaneously continued HopeMartha's ability to control her neck/head. Now HopeMartha benefits from yoga with Sheila on a mat at HopeMartha's home. The continual stretching has slowed the progression of cerebral palsy. Over the years, Sheila has also taught HopeMartha's family how to help release the tension from cerebral palsy so that the benefits from yoga continue through the week. -Kathy
