For decades, a small group of bicyclists and pedestrians fought hard to get first bike lanes, then dedicated bike paths, most notably the Schuylkill River Trail. Now, thanks to cheap, powerful batteries and motors from China, these little slivers of space are being colonized by two-wheeled motorists. They share all the traits of colonists, and with the worst drivers. E-Moto users are 99% aggressive young men, a significant portion of that group treats everyone else in their path as obstacles, with one interesting twist: they dislike mixing with auto traffic and so take their game to the bike lanes, bike trails, multi-use paths and, when they feel like it, the sidewalk. They count on everyone else to shift out of their way or freeze to keep their slot clear. It’s oppressive and echoes the way the drivers of SUV and oversized pickup trucks behave on city streets. Big Boy (4014) will be visiting Philly from the 3rd to the 6th of July, here's some info on where to see it!
.
Also I'd recommend getting to the Schuylkill trail around 10am on the 3rd to see it arrive as the crowds might be huge. On the 6th it'll be departing the Navy Yard at 9am, so be on the trail or wherever by then too. Stay off the tracks for your own safety!

SO, dear fellow railroad nerds, the world's largest active steam locomotive, Union Pacific's No. 4014 a.k.a. "Big Boy", is rumbling through PHL. It is predicted to roll down the tracks alongside the SRT in Center City at ABOUT NOON on JULY 3rd. *THUS* we might open a little late at the shop. Also, a Brompton Bicycle will make it easier to follow # 4014 for a bit and/or find the best viewing spots. OH, and it will depart along the same path about 9 a.m. on July 6th. Here's a good explainer: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DZsjMGpNcyN/

Recent happenings have prompted us to suggest a new annual event... A national holiday called SEATPOST SAVING TIME. Whichever bike shop staffer is most often late getting to work (including the owner-no exceptions) on Saturdays will be assigned a special outfit (brightly-colored shirt & tie) –and go door to door on the first Saturday every March, reminding cyclists that it's *WORLD SST DAY*. They will recite, a la Adam West as Batman: "CITIZENS! Please remove your bicycle's seatpost and place your bike upside down for one hour to help any moisture inside the frame escape. Then, clean your seatpost; if your seatpost or frame is made of carbon fiber, please apply carbon grip/anti-seize compound to your seatpost. Otherwise, apply a very thin coat of grease. After one hour, replace your seatpost and mark your calendar for next year's World SST Day. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION, BICYCLE OWNER!" ••• They will then dash to the next house (if there is a fence or hedge, hop over it for extra points) and repeat. (note: this holiday does not apply to Brompton Bicycle folders) Stop in sometime and we can explain why. BikeRadar Merry Sales Co. Bicycle Retailer and Industry News
