Why Does Pain Become More Intense at Sundown?
An Original Poem by Dr. Gregory A. Person
Why does pain become more intense at sundown,
When the daylight slowly fades away?
Why does my body seem to struggle more
At the closing of another day?
I made it through the morning,
I pushed through the afternoon,
But somehow, when the sun goes down,
The pain begins its familiar tune.
The world grows quiet around me,
But my body will not rest.
I search for just one comfortable place,
A position that feels best.
The pillows have been rearranged,
The covers pulled aside.
I try to find some comfort
From the pain I cannot hide.
People say, "Get some rest now,"
As though resting were a choice.
But pain has its own language,
And sometimes its own voice.
I don't always need an answer,
Or someone to tell me to be strong.
Sometimes I just need someone
To sit beside me when the nights are long.
Lord, You know that I am grateful,
But You also know I'm tired.
You see the tears I try to hold,
And the strength that is required.
So when the sun begins to set,
And pain comes knocking at my door,
Remind me that this difficult night
Does not define what lies in store.
For even in my weakest moments,
When I have done all I can do,
I can bring my tears before You, Lord,
And trust that You will see me through.
Because the sun may set upon my comfort,
But it does not set upon my hope.

Life can bring changes we never expected, challenges we never prepared for, and moments that forever change who we are. But even when life changes, we can learn to adjust, grow, and find the courage to carry on.

GRIEF CAN DEFLATE YOU.

Grief can drain your energy like a balloon that has lost its air.

You may look fine on the outside, while inside you feel empty, exhausted, and unable to rise.

Don’t rush yourself. Rest when you need to. Feel what you need to feel. And remember—even a deflated balloon can be filled again.

Hope can breathe life into you again.

Every tear has a name. Every teardrop tells a story.
