Proprietary, or non-standard parts are a problem for bicycle owners 04/10/2026

Do you want a “forever bike”?

A few weeks ago, a major parts supplier in the custom bike industry abruptly shut down after 43 years in business. Sad news, for sure.

While we only purchased from them occasionally, many custom builders relied on them for key frame components that are now built into countless bikes already out there.

Here’s the issue…

Some of their products used proprietary designs. That means those frame components require specific, custom-made parts to function... parts only that company produced.

At our shop, we intentionally avoid proprietary designs unless a customer fully understands and requests them. Because when a company disappears, so does access to those replacement parts.

Most builders assume a company that’s been around for decades will always be there.

That assumption just got tested.

This situation reminded me of an article I wrote back in 2012 about this exact topic, and why it matters if you’re thinking long-term.

If you want a bike that truly lasts, it’s worth a read.

Proprietary, or non-standard parts are a problem for bicycle owners Rodriguez Bicycle Company strives to stay within ISO standards so their customers bicycles will last.
