WHY WE DO THINGS: THE WHITEBOARD
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve continued our Why We Do Things series, so we’re back!
If you remember:
Week 1: Why we hold the standard.
We may not always be the fastest or scrappiest athletes in the room, but we want to be the athletes who move well.
Week 2: Range of motion.
Because we don’t just want to move well in the gym. We want to be strong enough to get off the floor, get out of that ridiculously squishy couch 😂, get back up after falling on the ski hill, and keep doing the things we love.
And now...
THE WHITEBOARD.
It’s where we keep track of scores.
It’s where we see who has already suffered before us. 😂
It’s where we set goals.
It’s where a little friendly competition happens.
It’s where we celebrate PRs, first pull-ups, big lifts, and sometimes simply showing up.
And yes, it can feel intimidating when you’re new.
If giving your score makes you nervous, don’t fret.
Maybe someday you’ll love putting your rounds + reps, weight, or time on the board.
Maybe you won’t.
Smiley faces count, too. ❤️
You’ll also start seeing a little dot next to someone’s name when we’re consistently seeing missed range of motion.
Not a grade.
Not a punishment.
Just awareness.
We’ll continue coaching you throughout class. The dot is simply another tool to help us say:
“Hey, let’s pay attention to this.”
Because the whiteboard isn’t just a scoreboard.
It’s part of our community.
It’s where we work.
We compete.
We celebrate.
And sometimes...
We just put a smiley face next to your name because we’re glad you’re here.
That’s why we use the whiteboard.
Next up: Why We Keep Score.

LET’S TALK ABOUT PROTEIN BARS. 🍓🥜
Why should we eat them?
When should we eat them?
And what the heck are we looking for in the ingredients?
Well…we have a new protein bar in the gym:

JACKED GRANNY. 👵💪

And honestly, we’re pretty excited about it.

First: WHY eat a protein bar?
A protein bar is a convenience food. It’s there for those times when getting a real meal with enough protein just isn’t happening.
Running from work to the gym?
Traveling?
Need something between meals?
Forgot to plan ahead?
That’s where a protein bar makes sense.

Next: WHAT are we looking for?
Protein. Obviously. 😂
But also…what is the protein coming from? What else is in the bar?

Jacked Granny is made with:
🥚 Egg whites
🥜 Peanuts
🍁 Maple syrup
🍓 Raspberries
That’s it.
16g of protein.
180 calories.
The macros are very, very close to what we’d call spot on for a snack-sized protein bar.
And the ingredients are so fresh that this bar actually has an expiration date.
No fillers.
No preservatives.
No mile-long ingredient list.
The protein is coming from real food instead of processed whey protein.
And before the whey protein people come after us 😂 — whey absolutely has its place. It’s a great, convenient source of protein.
But most of us probably don’t need multiple servings of whey protein every single day when we can get protein from actual food.

And then there’s the tin.
WHY the tin?
Because it gives the bar about 7 more days of shelf life.
Wow.
A company actually caring about shelf life instead of loading a bar with preservatives so it can sit on a shelf for six months?

Sign me up.

Now…the important question:

HOW DOES IT TASTE?
Does it taste like a candy bar?
No.
No, it does not. 😂
And that’s okay.
We’re sacrificing a little palatability for fresh, real ingredients and solid macros.
And if we go back to the question of why we’re eating a protein bar in the first place…
That seems like a pretty fair trade.
Real food.
Good protein.
Reasonable calories.
Convenient when you need it.
JACKED GRANNY.
Come try one and decide for yourself. 👵💪

Final Thoughts- By Ken Philips 2026 Masters Games Athlete

It was the experience of a lifetime.
Everything you could imagine and more.
I did better than expected.
No surprise, my best events were the ones with running or gymnastics and my worst were the rower and the bike.

But the placing really isn’t what I’ll remember most.

For me, CrossFit has always been a team sport. And that was never more true than in San Jose.
People carried my gear.
Got me warmed up.
Cheered me on.
Made sure I ate.
And every time I walked onto that competition floor, I could hear my people.
I honestly think I had the loudest support group at the Games.

And those shirts…
My entire entourage wore them all three days. People I didn’t even know were stopping me to shake my hand because they recognized me from the shirts.

Then, before the final event, Scott Panchik came up to me in the warm-up area, introduced himself, like I didn’t know who he was, shook my hand and told me he wanted to be me when he got to my age.
Yes… that Scott Panchik.
Pretty damn cool.

Now back home, even months later and it still feels like a dream.
Except it wasn’t.
It happened.
And I have the shirt to prove it.

Thank you, CrossFit Steamboat, for the last ten years of encouragement, coaching, friendship and support.

You helped turn a fantasy into reality.

Community really is the great strength of CrossFit. ❤️

The Bike Won - By Ken Phillips 2026 Masters Games Athlete

By the end of Wednesday, my arms were pretty cooked but I still had thrusters and burpees to conquer.
I figured the burpees would be easy.
The thrusters were the problem.
I planned to break them into sets of three.
Then 3-2-1…
I picked up the bar and ripped out 14.
So much for the plan. 😂
The burpees went easily, and I actually thought I might be leading. LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN, I was in first place at the CrossFit games, even if only for a few seconds.
But by the end, my arms were completely done.
I capped out only finishing 1 burpee of the final 6.
Somehow, that was still good enough for 4th in the event.
I finished the day tied for 4th overall.
And the calf had survived everything.
Pretty good day.
Unfortunately, I knew what was coming next.

The dreaded bike.

The final workout was bike calories and DT — deadlifts, hang cleans and shoulder-to-overheads.
I knew this one could be trouble.
And it was.
I pushed hard on the first bike and got through the calories in under two minutes. After that, I was hanging with the leaders.
I thought, Hey… maybe this isn’t so bad.
Then came the one-minute rest.
Apparently, one minute wasn’t enough.
The bike won.
The second round of calories took almost as long as the first, and I couldn’t finish the next round of DT.
Back to the bike one last time, then the final reps.
7th in the event.
5th overall at the CrossFit Games.
Going in, I figured 7th was probably realistic.
5th was the “looking at the stars” result.
Turns out the stars were a little closer than I thought.

***I didn’t add music to this one so we could hear his name called by the announcer!!!!! It’s true, he was there. lol.

WE AREN’T NECESSARILY RUNNERS. 😂
Today’s WOD wasn’t sexy.
Maybe we could even say it wasn’t exactly fun.
But every single person who showed up today left with a smile on their face.
It was a different kind of challenge. One that pushed some people outside their comfort zone. There were definitely some “I don’t want to do this” moments.
But you did it.
Maybe you surprised yourself.
Maybe you did better than you thought you could.
Maybe your biggest accomplishment was simply SHOWING UP.
And honestly? That’s what we’re here for.
Thanks for showing up today, guys. Proud of every one of you. ❤️
