We thought it was time to share a bit more about the coaches in our team and their story! We are starting with our head coach - Johann Wykerd ๐คฉ
โI was married for 31 years this September โ yes, to the same lady, Allegra ๐. As we celebrated our anniversary, I realised that if it wasnโt for Allegra, I would not have become a coach.
In my youth, I was a competitive waveski surfer and river paddler. The water was where I could express myself and had my full attention. The bicycle, however, has always played a role in my life. It was how I got around โ weโre talking about the days before Uber, etc.
Fast forward to 1995, when I got married. A tandem went with us on our honeymoon, and Allegra was introduced to cycling.
A couple of years later, Allegra started to become a very competitive mountain biker and told me she had her sights set on competing at the Masters MTB World Championships. And this is how my journey started. I started reading up on what I could about coaching and everything that goes with it.
In 1999, I started using TrainingPeaks. Now, nearly 30 years later, I have had the privilege of working with some of the best cycling talent in South Africa and Africa, and this has become my full-time business and passion.
To be able to play a small part in the health and life of someone who strives to be better is an unbelievable privilege, and it is something I take very seriously.
Over the years, my approach to what I do has evolved and continues to evolve. Throughout the process of gaining more knowledge and becoming more creative in how I guide my athletes, the one thing that is never compromised is the fact that I deal with a human being. The athleteโs unique situation and health need to be considered in everything I do.
Although I coach all cycling disciplines, I have a strong affinity for MTB stage racing and gravel racing.โ
