After taking out the 2026 WA Sport Promotion Award, Wave Rally has now been named one of just three national finalists in the Australian Sailing Awards. For an event created and run out of Geraldton, that’s a pretty special milestone — particularly as Wave Rally is the only finalist representing the Mid West. To be recognised alongside some of the strongest sailing events and organisations in Australia shows just how far this event has come in a short time. Proud to be flying the flag for Geraldton, Coronation Beach and the Mid West on the national stage.

Big thank you to Chantel Maughan and Rigters IGA Durlacher and Queens for supplying Wave Rally with a voucher to pay for supplies for the volunteers. This is the 2nd year they've done this in a row and it's very appreciated.

A big thank you to the Shire of Chapman Valley for once again providing financial support for the Wave Rally World Championships! This is now the third year the Shire has been involved with Wave Rally, and their support goes well beyond funding. Coronation Beach provides the incredible location for the event, and the Shire works with us on the permits and approvals that make the championships possible.

A special shout-out to the Shire rangers who look after Coronation Beach — they're always great to work with and help keep everything organised around the event. Absolute legends! And a big thank you to the waste collection crews who service the bins and dumpster at Coro and help us encourage everyone to recycle wherever possible. These are the behind-the-scenes jobs that make a big difference when you've got a lot of people using the site.

We're very fortunate to hold Wave Rally at such a special location and have the Shire behind us for the third year running. Thanks to everyone involved! 🤙

GERALDTON IS REACHING THE WORLD THROUGH WINDSURFING

We searched “Geraldton” on YouTube and sorted the results by views — and the result was pretty remarkable. 7 of the Top 10 videos are windsurfing videos, generating almost 1 million views between them.

And these figures don’t include Wave Rally. Content from the 2026 Wave Rally World Championships has generated around 60,000 additional YouTube views, showcasing Geraldton, Coronation Beach and the Mid West to audiences around Australia and overseas.

For us, the interesting part isn't just the numbers. It shows the enormous potential of windsurfing and wind sports as destination marketing for Geraldton and Western Australia.

Geraldton has something genuinely special — world-class conditions, spectacular coastline and an international windsurfing community that travels here specifically to experience it.

We’d love to see that opportunity continue to grow.

🏆 WAVE RALLY WINS AUSTRALIAN SAILING WA SPORT PROMOTION AWARD! 🏆

We’re incredibly happy to announce that the Wave Rally World Championships in Geraldton has won the Sport Promotion Award at the Western Australian Sailing Awards, with event organiser Paul van Bellen receiving the honour on behalf of the event.

From Australian Sailing - WA, “The Wave Rally World Championships is recognised for its outstanding contribution to the promotion of sailing and windsurfing through the delivery of a truly world-class international event. Bringing together 73 competitors aged from 14 to 72, including 17 international sailors from eight countries, the event achieved remarkable growth in audience engagement, with Facebook views increasing by more than 700% to over 814,000 and YouTube views growing by 550% to more than 50,000, while also delivering an estimated economic benefit of over $126,000 to the Mid West region, demonstrating excellence in participation, innovation, community engagement and the global promotion of our sport.”

Wave Rally is a Geraldton born event, created right here in the Mid West and developed into an internationally recognised windsurfing championship. This award is a fantastic recognition of what the event has achieved —showcasing windsurfing in an exciting new format, promoting Geraldton and the Mid West, and taking our sport to a much wider audience through high-quality media, video and event coverage.

It is also a wonderful result for the region. Events like Wave Rally bring competitors, supporters and visitors to Geraldton, create opportunities for local businesses, showcase the Mid West to audiences around Australia and overseas, and highlight the incredible conditions and lifestyle our region has to offer.

What started as an idea to create something different has grown into an internationally recognised windsurfing event, bringing competitors, supporters and viewers together from around Australia and overseas.

This award belongs to everyone who has helped make Wave Rally possible, our competitors, volunteers, sponsors, Windsurfing WA, supporters, media partners and the Geraldton community.

A huge thank you to Australian Sailing for recognising the work being done to promote our sport.

We’re proud that this Geraldton born event is making such a positive contribution to the Mid West and we’re even more excited about where Wave Rally is heading next.

In case you aren't aware, "Australia's Coral Coast is the peak tourism body responsible for branding, positioning, marketing and driving visitation to the coastal region of Western Australia - extending north from Cervantes to Exmouth and inland via the shires bordering the Midlands Road to Mullewa."
