Vulnerable story 👇🏼

Last week my son Rio had his first meltdown on the tennis court during a match and I was frozen. I didn’t really know what to do or how to support him as a parent.

He has only been playing tennis for 5 weeks so he’s still relatively new to lessons and matchplay however he’s been obsessed. Every afternoon I pick him up from school and straight away he asks ‘Are we going to tennis?’.

To be honest, I thought the first time he lost a match he was going to have a huge meltdown, but he didn’t. He has actually been losing fine in his weekly matchplay and has actually been enjoying it. He’s been more focused on concentrating on his shots and the process, but this week, it happened and he threw his racquet and stormed off court.

It got me thinking, I must not be the only parent who feels unsure how to handle this situation and how to support him in that moment.

So I wanted to start documenting my journey with everything I’m learning, what I’m doing as a parent, what’s working and what’s not working in teaching my child how to learn to lose.
