Can Do Aquatics

Can Do Aquatics One one one swimming lessons for all children, offering specialised programs. Qualified Autism Swim Instructor

With 16 years of experience in childcare, including 15 years as a dedicated swim instructor and 10 years specializing in teaching individuals with autism, I bring a wealth of expertise to my work. I also hold a Certificate III in Support Work, which reinforces my commitment to providing tailored, compassionate care. I am passionate about empowering children who may not thrive in mainstream swimming programs. My goal is to help them build confidence in the water, ensure their safety in and around aquatic environments, and teach them the essential skill of swimming. I conduct one-on-one swimming lessons in a quiet, indoor, heated ozone pool. My approach centers on the child's unique abilities and interests, ensuring a supportive and personalized learning experience.

Tactile & Proprioceptive Development

Enhanced Tactile Discrimination: The child relies solely on the receptors in their fingers to map out the shape, texture, and physical limits of the peg and the hoop, sharpening fine tactile sensitivity.

Proprioceptive Feedback: Without visual cues to show where their limbs are, the brain relies on feedback from joints and muscles to sense hand position, improving body awareness (proprioception) relative to objects in space.

Manual Dexterity & Fine Motor Control: Squeezing and positioning the peg requires precise finger isolation and force control purely guided by tactile feedback, strengthening hand intrinsic muscles.

Sensory Integration & Water Confidence

Dual-Task Sensory Integration: Managing breath holding and buoyancy control simultaneously with complex touch-based tasks enhances central nervous system adaptability under multi-sensory conditions.

Overcoming Visual Reliance in Water: Developing tactile confidence underwater reduces panic or disorientation if vision is obstructed by water, goggles fogging, or low visibility.

Cognitive & Motor Planning

Spatial Mapping (Haptic Perception): The child builds a mental 3D blueprint of the object purely through touch (stereognosis), driving complex cognitive processing and motor planning (praxis).

Enhanced Focus & Regulation: Operating blindly underwater forces deep concentration and internal focus, promoting calm, deliberate movement rather than frantic visual searching.
