Grounding with Ruth

Grounding with Ruth You are not broken. You are buried. I combine social work experience with meditation and breathwork training - plus a healthy dose of reality.

Registered social worker helping women move through exhaustion, self-doubt & disconnection — through 1:1 sessions, meditations, A Grounded Life course and the Inspired Questions podcast. I'm a social worker turned stress management guide who believes women deserve better than burnout culture and wellness industry snake oil. After years of helping people navigate life's challenges professionally, I started Grounding with Ruth to support women who feel like they need to do everything, show up everywhere, and shoulder too much. When I'm not working with clients or recording my podcast Inspired Questions, you'll find me reading murder mysteries, hanging out with my husband and our standard schnauzer Huron (plus three cats who run the house). I'm Canadian, a little quirky, and firmly believe that authenticity beats perfection every single time.

There are a million reasons not to make time for yourself.

Work. Kids. Other people who need you. The never-ending list of things that somehow feel more important.

I get it.

But there is one reason that trumps all of them:

You matter.

You deserve a life you feel good about.

You deserve an hour to stop and notice what is happening for you instead of automatically moving on to the next thing.

You deserve to be surrounded by women who can see what an incredible human being you are right now. Not once you've figured everything out or become some better version of yourself.

Tomorrow night, I'm creating that space.

When You Don't Know What You're Supposed to Do Anymore is a free live masterclass for women who are tired of looking outside themselves for the right answer and want to create a little more room to hear their own.

There will always be a reason not to make the time.

I'm asking you to give yourself one reason to do it anyway.

Because you matter.

Maybe right now, a decision looks like this:

You think about what everyone else will think.

You try to figure out what you're supposed to do.

You run through every possible outcome.

You ask someone else what they would do.

And somewhere in all of that, what you think gets harder and harder to hear.

I don't think the transformation is becoming a person who always knows the answer.

I don't think it's always saying no, choosing yourself first or making the decision that feels good.

Sometimes you'll take the time to check in with yourself and still choose to do something you don't particularly want to do because something else matters more to you.

Sometimes you'll know a choice is right for you and still feel sad, guilty or uncomfortable making it.

And sometimes you'll take the space and still have absolutely no idea what to do.

The difference is that you're no longer automatically handing the decision over to the loudest voice in the room.

You can pause.

Notice what's happening.

Notice what's yours and what might be coming from somewhere else.

And give yourself enough room to choose.

Not perfectly.

But with yourself actually part of the decision.

That's what I want you to experience with me on Tuesday.

I didn't build this because I think I can teach you how to make the right decisions.

I don't think there is always one.

I built it because I know how easy it is to lose what you think underneath what you're supposed to think, what everyone else needs and all the noise that comes with trying to get things right.

And because before we can choose differently, sometimes we need enough space to actually hear ourselves.

That's where we're starting.

You don’t have to be falling apart to be overwhelmed.

You might actually be getting a lot done.

Keeping people happy. Handling what needs to be handled. Saying yes. Pushing through. Trying to make the right decisions.

And wondering why, when it comes to something you need or want, you suddenly feel completely stuck.

This is one of the things we’re going to explore next Tuesday.

When You Don’t Know What You’re Supposed to Do Anymore is a free live masterclass for women who are tired of trying to do everything right — and still feel like they’re getting it wrong.

Tuesday, September 29 at 7pm ET.

Come live if you can. We’re not just going to talk about this. I want you to experience making a little more room to hear yourself.

My first conversation on Women, Unfiltered is with my friend and a woman I greatly respect Ruth Hirshberg Ruth

We talk about unlearning, letting go of the pressure to pretend we’re okay and what happens when we finally get honest about what we’re really going through.

Why so many of us carry that feeling, the weight of trying to hold everything together and still fall short.

Ruth is certain of one thing: there is nothing wrong with you.

Full conversation is live now.

It will be available on Spotify & Apple Podcasts.

Link in bio or comment RUTH and I’ll send it.

So much of my work is about showing up honestly. But I am learning how hard that can be when the truth is something I don’t want to be real.

I have been going back and forth about sharing this because posting it makes it real in a new way.

But I want to honour her. I want the world to know that she was here, that she was deeply loved, and that I am grieving her.

Olive was my soul.

She came into my life unexpectedly when I was at a big transition point. I had just graduated with my Master of Social Work and was looking for my first job. She came with me as I started working and living in a new place.

She was with me through periods of loneliness and she filled me up.

She had an adorable chirpy little meow and was the least graceful cat I have ever met. She clomped around and wasn’t a great jumper. She was a bit like me.

She welcomed Keith into our family by pooping on his pillow and giving him a fair amount of stink eye.

She perfected kitty grumpy face. But when she looked at me, I felt like I could see the love radiating through her.

When I went through my darkest period, she was a huge comfort. Holding her soft, purring body became a refuge.

We had 17 years together, but a lifetime wouldn’t have been long enough.

I try to comfort myself by telling myself she is with Gus. They loved each other so much, and it isn’t surprising that she left me four months after he did. Maybe they couldn’t bear to be apart either.

The grief is huge. She wasn’t just my cat. She was a piece of my heart.

I’m not ready to process this publicly or find meaning in it. I’m not okay, and I don’t know what showing up here will look like for a while. But I couldn’t carry on without acknowledging her and how much she mattered.
