🐴 A shelter is only effective if all horses can access it when they need it.

Can all horses access shelter without being driven away?
Are there multiple entry and exit points?
Is the shelter clean and dry?

Welfare is about meeting the needs of every horse, not just the dominant ones.

Did you know? Horses need to lie down to get their deepest sleep.

While horses can doze standing up, they must lie down to achieve REM sleep.

If a horse doesn't feel safe, comfortable, or have adequate space to lie down, sleep deprivation can become a welfare concern.

Unexpected stumbling or buckling at the knees and reluctance to lie down would be big red flags!
Good welfare includes providing an environment where horses feel secure enough to rest properly.

Did you know? Senior horses can have more difficulty regulating their body temperature.

As horses age, changes in metabolism, muscle mass, body condition, and overall health can make it harder to stay comfortable during temperature extremes.

Watch for:

1) Weight loss during cold weather
2) Increased energy needs in winter
3) Difficulty coping with heat and humidity
4) Longer recovery after temperature extremes

Monitoring body condition, ensuring access to shelter, and making seasonal management adjustments can help keep senior horses comfortable year-round.
