A total of 131 people gathered in Japan this month to take an exam to become certified ninjas.

The 18th Koka-ryu Ninja Certification Exam was held in Koka, Shiga Prefecture, an area historically associated with Japan's ninja traditions.

Participants traveled from across Japan and overseas.

The exam was divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Candidates were tested on ninja history, practical skills, and traditional techniques.

At the beginner level, contestants could earn additional points for their ninja costumes and their performance in shuriken throwing.

Many participants arrived in full ninja attire, ranging from traditional outfits to more elaborate interpretations.

Those who passed received an official scroll recognizing them as Koka ninjas.

The event has become an annual effort to preserve a local historical tradition while also attracting a new generation of enthusiasts.

It's probably one of the few exams where showing up dressed like a ninja can actually improve your score.
