Offshore wind in Erie is always promising and visibility has been very good 20-40' or more, while the Tiller has been absolutely spectacular as always.

Another great weekend. Raleigh and Tiller diving back home were epic and Kingston, ON will never be the same after yet another ridiculously fun DDS Weekend.

Great weather and wrecks as always out there as we enjoyed great wrecks, fun, food, some culture and history and tourist stuff like “barefoot waterskiing.”

This summer had been amazing. Get out and dive with us before the seasons over.

Awesome turnout to a nice limited visibility night drift dive in the river. After a weekend of rain and wind, air pollution from wild fires 🔥, Lake Erie had a lot of particulate in the water. It was better than Sunday but still a little murky, still super fun.

Because of all the rain the Niagara River is flowing much fastest which is a bonus. 35 mins and start swimming in from international train bridge to Frenchman’s Creek.

We had most of the store staff in the water as a lot of our long time DDS Divers came out and a few new ones too.

It’s been an interesting week for weather and this past weekend was no different as we spent the day diving off Long Point in Lake Erie on the beautiful 2 masted schooner St. James and the hogging arch steamer Oneida.
�Conditions were interesting with there being so much particulate matter the shot line was barely visible all the way down until around 70’ and then the lights went out as we had a night dive sort of vibe with nearly zero ambient light penetrating down to either ship.

The St. James sits usually in a depth of 165’ depending on the year, but this year, 155’ max depth! The silt has moved around the wreck, creating silt waves, most noticeably at midship where the silt has piled up to about 2 feet below the start of the railing. The strange currents out here have always been fascinating as the sides are boxed in with the silt, the bow and stern seem to have little more relief with the rudder sitting several feet deeper than the rest of the lake bottom.

The ships wheel has been almost completely buried and the p**p cabin had so much silt on top of it, that the roof has collapsed over top of the entrance to the crew’s quarters. We were worried the roof is going to collapse further, as you can see the wood shifting under the weight of the silt.

The anchors and beautiful ram figurehead were till a gorgeous site with the anchor chains cascading down from the bowsprit like a painting from days of old. The forward mast still standing upright from the deck to just 80’ below the surface and the rudder looking smaller as the silt seemed to be closing in around the whole ship, it was very strange.

The Oneida was awesome as always. A little more ambient light, this hogging arch package steamer that was carrying 3500 barrels of flour when it sank in 1852.

The prop, boiler and engine are still visible. There are a lot of burbot (some call them ling cod they aren’t) are located around the wreck as well.

It’s always fascinating seeing the way the water pushes the bottom composition around, but also, the lack of diving this area over the last decade and a half has really shown that nature is taking over. If you’d like to help the wrecks in this part of the lake rebound, bring some scooters and lets go have some fun :)
