THE MOST OVERHYPED MUSCLE IN THE YOGA WORLD. Two psoas myths I want to retire because the truth about this muscle is much more interesting than the marketing. Myth #1: that the psoas causes most low back pain. It can absolutely contribute when it’s chronically tense — pulling on spinal fascia, compressing discs, restricting the breath. But back pain is never due to a single factor. Movement and breath patterns, fascia, nervous system state all matter. (And the research tells us the strongest predictor of male back pain is job satisfaction. Contemplate that for a moment.) Myth # 2: that you can release your psoas by rolling on a tennis ball. The psoas sits behind your organs and major arteries. Any aggressive pressure is just bruising your gut. Aggressive stretching is no better. The psoas is nervous system tissue. It clenches when it doesn’t feel safe, and strong force signals threat. The way out is through connection, not force. The truth about the psoas is this: this multidimensional muscle bridges your breath to your walking, spine to your femur and fight-flight to your resilience.
