PROMOTING SPORT AND FITNESS
Sport has always played a big part in Cory Blackbird’s life.
The Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation citizen grew up playing baseball and hockey.
Now, he is sharing that passion with the students in his Nation’s school.
Cory graduated from Brandon University’s PENT Indigenous Teacher Education Program in 2011.
While he started teaching in the classroom, he knew he wanted to make his way into the gymnasium.
Cory made that transition in 2021 and has not looked back since.
Along with teaching regular gym classes, Cory has been working to bring back team sports to the school. In fact, this month he is taking a Keeseekoowenin youth baseball team to a tournament in Winnipeg.
When asked about his motivation, Cory says he loves seeing his students develop skills they never thought they had.
Having a teacher who inspires while also helping our children develop strengths, in all aspects of their growth, is invaluable.
Today, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) lifts up Keeseekoowenin’s Cory Blackbird and all the phys ed teachers who promote healthy living and physical activity in our Nations.
If you would like more information about healthy choices and details about our campaign, be sure to check out SCO’s website at: https://scoinc.mb.ca/knowledge-is-medicine/
