Disagreeing with your manager isn’t the problem.
How you do it matters.

You can raise a concern without turning the conversation into a battle over authority.

Focus on the goal, share what you see, and help move the conversation towards a better decision.

That’s not disrespect. That’s good judgment.

You can lose years of your career waiting for people to return the loyalty, effort and support you’ve given them.

Do good work. Have integrity.

But pay attention to what your workplace is actually showing you and make your career decisions accordingly.

Your manager can’t advocate for work they don’t remember.

A short update today can make it much easier for them to speak to your impact months from now, especially in the rooms you’re not in.

Don’t just do good work. Make it easy to remember.

Being trusted to get the work done is valuable.

But as you move up, decision-makers need to trust you with more than ex*****on.

They need to trust your judgment.

Trust you to make decisions.

Trust you to see what needs attention without always being told.

That kind of trust is built through the small moments they experience with you every day.

Don’t wait for the bigger opportunity to prove you can handle more. Start giving them the evidence now.

If you want to move up, you need more than your manager’s support—you need a point of view about your own career.

The clearer you are about where you’re going and what you still need to prove, the more useful your career conversations become.

Don’t outsource your career strategy. Use your manager’s perspective to make it better.

Being good at solving problems isn’t always enough.

If you quietly handle everything, your manager may see the result without seeing what it took from you to get there.

The risk? They know you’re reliable, but they may be missing the judgment, foresight, and decision-making behind that reliability.

You don’t need to announce everything you do.

But when something important comes up, don’t just show the result. Let them see how you got there.

That’s how good work becomes evidence of what you’re capable of.

When the expectations keep changing, it’s easy to assume there must still be something you need to fix.

So you work harder. Take on more. Prove yourself again.

And before you know it, years can pass while you’re still trying to become “good enough” for a target that keeps moving.

Take the feedback seriously. Look at yourself honestly.

But when you’ve repeatedly done what was asked and the answer is still “not yet,” start evaluating the path too.

Not every problem at work requires more effort from you. Sometimes the pattern itself is the information.

Praise feels good....until you realize you’ve been hearing the same praise for years while the opportunities keep going to someone else.

If your work is already valued, more hard work may not be the answer.

The important question is: what’s preventing that good work from turning into the opportunities you want?

My free 2-minute Recognition Gap Audit™ can help you identify what may be getting in the way and what deserves your attention next.

Comment “AUDIT” and I’ll send it to you.

You can spend months trying to change one person’s mind about you.

More work. More proof. More effort.

And sometimes, it works.

But when it doesn’t, the cost isn’t just frustration.

It’s the time and energy you’re not investing in other relationships, opportunities, and paths that could move your career forward.

Make a reasonable effort. Take the feedback. Adjust what needs adjusting.

But know when it’s time to stop trying to convert one person.

Your career is bigger than one person’s opinion of you.
