You can still get fitter even when gaining muscle. Here’s how…

Last week I hit a pb on one of my assault bike times, while being a few kg heavier than when I last tested it.

And I’ve also recently matched old running pb times from years ago. When I was at least 4-5kg lighter.

Yet people STILL believe that the second you even look at a weight you’ll slow down and lose all your hard earned progress. But maybe, there’s a better way?

Could it be that you’re just hitting the weights till you feel sore and not actually following a structure or getting stronger?

Could it be that you’re just running too fast, getting knackered and trying to hit pbs every week? Instead of doing the boring, slow stuff?

Could it be that you are in fact not eating enough (no, a singular egg and a slice of toast is not enough breakfast)?

If you try to just hammer the gym and running multiple times a week with no structure without eating enough or recovering then it’ll be hard to see any real progress.

For me, three strength sessions and two conditioning sessions a week is ideal and achievable. Anything more and I’ll just be stressing about fitting it all in.

But there’s one even more important thing…

I’m not focusing so much on how I look or what my scale weight says. Just how I feel during my sessions, what I’m lifting and what I’m logging during my conditioning times.

So I don’t second guess things and don’t flip flop between goals. So I actually stick to the plan and focus on what matters. The training and how I feel session to session.

You can totally get stronger and still get fitter along the way. You just need a bit more structure and a bit of guidance along the way. Send me a message to see how I can help!

Out of office for the week!

Because I am horrendous at using my holiday allowance I’m taking a nice wee week off this week to rest up and recharge before the last push before the Christmas holidays.

It’s been a fantastic few weeks and I honestly can’t believe how quickly it’s flown by. Feeling like I’m striking a great balance between growing my business, progressing on my own fitness goals and making time for loved ones!

Will be back to business as usual next week but will be chilling out this week.

What a whirlwind of a week!

One of my best weeks ever enquiry wise at work and spent a lot of time putting things in place for my time off next week so very very busy.

Spent the whole weekend unwinding (with some performative reading in the sun mixed in) and ready for another busy week.

The aim is to survive my last few sessions, onboard my new clients and punis-I mean train all my current clients so they’re set up for the week I’m away!

A fantastic week of training!

Really feeling the progress across the board, hitting some all time pbs on the assault bike while lifting heavier!

One more week ahead to push before a wee week off work!

An easy way to take the mental load out of training…

Keep it simple!

Believe me, as someone who’s previously wasted months and months in the past just dithering and programme hopping, you just need something basic.

Not constantly changing your mind about which exercises to pop into your programme after one week. Not spending an hour researching on your feed or on YouTube (which could be spent training btw 👀).

Just sticking to a handful of exercises.

I used to constantly wonder whether or not I was doing the right thing, change up my programme the second I saw something new that MIGHT work and then wonder why I wasn’t getting any stronger.

The same people you look at and go “Jeezy peeps, they’re strong!” and the same athletes you try to copy all do one thing. The same workouts, for a LONG time.

I honestly believe that loads of people could benefit from just stopping the YouTube rabbit holes, simplifying their workouts, taking 5-6 exercises and just putting some solid effort into them. For months at a time.

I know it’s boring, but I also know that the vast majority of people do not do it. I can guarantee you that if you stuck with the same workouts for a few months and just tried to progress on them you WILL get better at them and get more confident at them!

And if you ever want to take even more guesswork out of what to do and need someone to keep you accountable, drop me a message!

It’s not gonna be the most “optimal” programme that gets results….

It’s the one you can actually stick with when you’re busy.

My online client Eric didn’t struggle with knowing WHAT to do if he got into the gym. He was far from a beginner when he started working with me.

He wanted to know how he could tweak his programme around his busy workload (and tricky sleep schedule) as a pilot.

So this didn’t mean we gave him four gruelling 90 min sessions per week to do. Just a selection of lifts to focus on and some extras if he had the time.

No fluff, just the basic stuff he needed to focus on to get stronger as hell. And some accountability and support to help him stick with it and work around those ever changing work patterns.

Was it “optimal?” Nope. Did it help him stay consistent and get stronger than ever across the board WITHOUT leaving him so sore he couldn’t blast through a few hikes the day after? Yep!

You don’t need a crazy complex plan to get results. Let me show you how you can get crazy strong without faffing around for hours in the gym.

Not quite sure where the whole week went!

After some minor flat stresses earlier in the week had a gorgeous few days enjoying some nice food and nice company!

Had an incredible meal out at Taisteal - Restaurant in Edinburgh’s New Town

Visited a new furry friend (it is my friend’s, not mine).

Tried out a running club for the first time and acquired some new socks while I was there (should have pretended it was like the false influencers)

Got lucky with some spells of daylight that decided to actually appear while I WASN’T at work too.

Had a wee deload from training last week so keen to push on for another few before a bit of time off!

I told one of my online clients not to bother with creating a home gym. Here’s why…

Now I know, I know it sounds incredibly counter intuitive and some people hate a busy gym. But there’s a good reason why this client didn’t need to set up a home gym….

Because it would only be another form of procrastinating. Something that a lot of people are guilty of.

My client was not struggling with staying consistent because he couldn’t get to the gym, it was because he was stuck in the rut of only training when he felt like it.

Time wasn’t an issue, the gym wasn’t far away at all either. It was the mental load of training after work when he felt knackered.

And yes, to a degree getting a set up in his own home could make it a tiny bit easier. I actually do create home workouts for clients when they genuinely can’t make it to the gym some weeks. But just like how getting a new gym programme gives you that wee boost short term, it doesn’t change the main issue….

You will have loads and loads of sessions that you don’t want to do and do not feel 100% up to. And to make any long term progress you will have to still do them.

Trying to chase novelty, buy something new or try a new programme can sometimes be a great wee boost and you should still do it occasionally. But if it’s the ONLY thing that gets you training, it might be worth checking yourself 👀

It doesn’t matter how many times you change up your programme, buy some new equipment or create a new gym playlist. You need to get used to not just training when you feel 100% motivated. You need to just show up and put in some effort on the day, even if you think it will be a bad session.

And a lot of times, you’ll be shocked at just how well the session goes and maybe even hit a few pbs like my client did 👀

Schedule some time each week in your diary, do the same handful of exercises and do what you can on the day. It can honestly be that easy.

And if you need more help to figure out what to do and help with sticking with it, send me a message to chat about online coaching!

An important reminder about nutrition…

Watching one YouTube video or listening to a podcast is not enough “research” when it comes to nutrition.

You have not “looked into it” when all you’ve done is listened to 40 mins of someone waffling on about one study then trying to flog a supplement.

This isn’t to say not to watch the odd YouTube video or podcast, it’s how I got interested in nutrition after all! But it’s also how I ended up getting a lot of things wrong. (I am ashamed to say there was a time I consumed less carbs on purpose).

Just think really, really critically before you take one snippet of info as gospel and try to use it yourself.

For example, why is this guest on the podcast? Do they conveniently sell a supplement that the host is an investor in (DIARY OF A SUPPLEMENT SALESMAN PERCHANCE?)?

Does the person giving this “too good to be true” advice happen to have a page with a huge following where they ONLY recommend a really strict protocol or diet that they profit from?

Nutrition can feel super complex and although it’s great we have access to so much info, it can also mean that it’s easier to get led astray.

Do not let that be you 👀
