The club are proud to support Cowglen member Robert ( pictured in Blue) raise awareness and funds for this wonderful charity.
Robert's story is below:
We wish him and the rest of the team, all the very best.
My Story - Robert Downs
In the UK 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Unfortunately, I am one of those statistics. Earlier this year, after a PSA test, MRI and biopsy I was told I had prostate cancer. I've been very lucky - I underwent surgery quickly and I am now cancer free.
While my experience could've been a lot worse the physical and mental toll of the last few months has been intense. Charities like Prostate Cancer UK are invaluable to supporting men and their families through their treatment and the aftermath and that's why I'm taking part in the The Big Golf Race to help raise funds for vital research.
My cancer was detected early and there is no doubt that has been a huge contributing factor to my recovery. There is no national screening programme so getting a PSA test is a must!
On Friday 26 June, me, Stuart McAffrey, Kris Jamieson, Steven Black, David Devine, Andy Park, Kieran Downs, Alan Jones, Davie Scott, Andy Park Jnr, Jonathan Gibson and Derek Clarke will be undertaking 72 holes of golf - four rounds in one day all to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
Every pound raised helps fund vital prostate cancer research that could lead to earlier diagnosis and a future where men’s lives aren’t left to chance. Any donations are very gratefully received.
I am delighted and proud to say we have the backing from Cowglen, Pollok and Whitecraigs Golf Clubs and for that I am so grateful.
First round - 4.30am Whitecraigs
Second round - 9.00 Pollok
Third round - 13.30 Cowglen
Fourth round - 18.00 Cowglen

Greens have recovered well from our works last week, vertical cutting removed lateral growth and refined the sward and sand topdressing firmed and smoothed up the greens. Greens are now being mown at 4mm and stimping around 10feet.
We are about to begin the seeding phase of the season where the poa annua plant produces a seedhead which can effect smoothness. To counter act this we spray a chemical called a plant growth regulator (PGR) this will reduce the pronunciation of the seed, holding it tighter to the sward.

Another Club Milestone - Course Ownership
It has been a week of milestones here at Cowglen Golf Club. Following swiftly on the heels of our 120th anniversary, today is another important date in our history.
On the 15th of May 1986 the club completed the purchase of the land here at Cowglen from the Maxwell family.
The acquisition of the land was completed for the sum of £190,000. It was funded through club funds, bank loans and crucially
£100,000 provided by the members by the way of interest free loans.
The first picture attached is of the Club Captain Bill Gibson presenting the cheque to Donald Maxwell-Macdonald, grandson of Sir John Stirling Maxwell.
The second picture is of Douglas Murray from the ex-Captains society presenting the commemorative plaque to the Honorary President, Bill McCulloch.
In the same way that we are indebted to those early pioneers, we also owe thanks to those who had the vision and the tenacity to buy the land and preserve our future.
