This was a fun lesson to teach. Here the students were working on a spin side kick with a hop. Sounds easy but it can be tricky. This kick is for distance but done correctly it can cover alot of ground quickly.
A normal hop side kick can have a fair bit of power, while being really difficult to read. The key is not shifting your weight to your back leg, lifting the chamber of the front leg, and hopping before you lose balance. This needs to be done out of normal kicking range, giving the opponent a false sense of security.
If you are too far away for a hop side kick, adding a spin will give you and extra foots reach or the width of your hips. Which leads us to this video, this was the first time these students tried this sparing technique.

Well done to everyone that took part yesterday in the Red belt and above grading and assessments. It was hot but everyone did the job and got on with it. A massive congratulations to Finley on receiving his 1st Degree Black Belt and others that achieved their next Belt.

This was the other day when it was really hot.
The lesson plan was to have them spar and work on non telegraphing their kicks. Due to the heat, I didn't want the students to over heat in the sparing equipment.
So I had them do this instead.
If the pad holder could see the kicker telegraph their kick they could donk them with the ninja stick.
They could try any kick.
The key is being lose and not shifting your weight before you kick.
