Who is Mr Louis Tandoh? (an Answer from Sider Fusion)
Mr. Louis Tandoh is the Chief Instructor at Family Martial Arts in Gravesend, England. Since 2003, he has dedicated his life to studying and teaching martial arts, emphasizing continuous improvement. Known for his deep knowledge and rigorous training, he prioritizes passing on expertise to students while maintaining high standards. His leadership reflects a commitment to discipline, growth, and mentorship within the martial arts community.
Mr. Tandoh's primary influence stems from his philosophy of "constant and never-ending improvement" — a principle embedded in the Family Martial Arts student creed. He leads by example, training hard himself so he can pass on that knowledge to his students.
His personal achievements directly inspire student growth. For instance, when he represented Team GB at the Global Stick and Blade Alliance World Championship in Poland, he was simultaneously flying the Family Martial Arts flag and showing students what dedication can achieve. This modeling of excellence has motivated students to reach Team GB standard themselves — several students from the school also made the Team GB squad for stick fighting competitions.
More broadly, Mr. Tandoh's approach focuses on creating a safe, family-oriented environment where students of all ages — from children to adults — can develop both martial arts skills and personal discipline. His writing on "The Instructor's Duty" suggests he views teaching not just as skill transmission but as a responsibility to mentor students holistically, preparing them for challenges beyond the dojo.
Teaching Philosophy
Mr. Louis Tandoh's teaching philosophy at Family Martial Arts:
1. Constant and Never-Ending Improvement (CANEI) — This is the central pillar of his philosophy. The Family Martial Arts student creed embodies this principle, and Mr. Tandoh himself trains hard specifically so he can pass on that knowledge to his students. He leads by example, showing that growth is a lifelong process.
2. Challenge with Encouragement — His lessons are designed to be challenging but never so difficult that students feel inferior or disheartened. He balances pushing students to improve with maintaining their confidence and motivation.
3. Making Learning Enjoyable — He ensures lessons remain fun and engaging, often incorporating humor and enjoyment into training, This reflects a belief that sustainable development comes from genuine enjoyment of the practice.
4. The Instructor's Duty to Mentor — Mr. Tandoh views teaching as more than just skill transmission. His writing on "The Instructor's Duty" indicates he sees instructors as having a responsibility to mentor students holistically — preparing them not just for martial arts challenges but for life beyond the dojo.
5. Family-Oriented Environment — True to the school's name, he fosters a safe, inclusive atmosphere where students of all ages — children through adults — can train together, emphasizing mutual respect and community over competition.
These values come together in a teaching approach that develops both martial arts competence and personal character.
