Your hamstrings are not just there to bend your knee. They help protect it.
During high speed running, landing and deceleration, the hamstrings help control the tibia and can oppose anterior tibial translation, reducing the demand placed on the ACL (Liu and Maitland, 2000).
Research has also found that athletes with a lower hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio were more likely to sustain non contact ACL injuries (Taketomi et al., 2024; Shimozaki et al., 2024).
But just doing hamstring curls isn’t enough.
You need to train the hamstrings to:
• Produce force
• Absorb force eccentrically
• Work at longer muscle lengths
• Control the knee under speed
• Integrate with sprinting, landing and deceleration
Strong quads + weak hamstrings = a balance you don’t want.
And remember, ACL injuries are multifactorial. Strong hamstrings won’t make you ACL proof, but developing the entire posterior chain should be part of building a more robust athlete.

The glute medius might be one of the most undertrained muscles in athletes.
It plays a major role in controlling your pelvis, hip and knee when running, landing and changing direction.
Research shows:
• Glute medius activation contributes to pelvic stability during single leg loading, influencing the forces acting around the knee (Rutherford and Hubley-Kozey, 2016).
• Reduced glute medius activity has been associated with patellofemoral pain and altered lower limb mechanics (Barton et al., 2013; Syed et al., 2024).
• Hip strengthening can improve pain and function in people with patellofemoral pain (Thomson et al., 2016).
Think of the chain:
Pelvic control → femur control → knee position → foot placement → better force absorption and production.
But weak glutes are not the root cause of every ACL, hip or knee injury. Injuries are multifactorial. The glute medius is one important piece of the system.
Train the muscle. Then train it to control movement under speed and load.
