This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the incredible Black British sportspeople who have broken barriers, made history and inspired generations to get moving!🌟
From the athletics track to the swimming pool, the boxing ring to the football pitch, their stories remind us that sport is about so much more than winning medals. It’s about determination, opportunity, representation and making sure everyone has the chance to achieve their potential💪🏾
Their achievements remind us why places like Southgate Leisure Centre matter. Whether you’re learning to swim, building confidence in the gym, trying a new fitness class or discovering a sport for the first time, everyone deserves the opportunity to get involved, feel welcome and thrive🙌🏾

🏃🏾♂️ Sir Mo Farah
From overcoming adversity to becoming a four-time Olympic champion, Mo showed the world what dedication, resilience and hard work can achieve.
🏅 Dame Tessa Sanderson
A true trailblazer who became the first Black British woman to win Olympic gold, taking home the javelin title at the 1984 Olympics and inspiring generations to aim high.
🥊 Nicola Adams
Making history at London 2012 as the first woman to win Olympic boxing gold, Nicola helped pave the way for more women to take up the sport and challenge expectations.
🏊🏾♀️ Alice Dearing
A pioneer in British swimming, Alice became the first Black woman to represent Great Britain in Olympic swimming at Tokyo 2020. Through her work with the Black Swimming Association, she continues to champion greater representation, access and water safety.
🏎️ Sir Lewis Hamilton
A seven-time Formula 1 World Champion who broke barriers as the sport’s first Black driver and continues to push for greater diversity and inclusion in motorsport.
⚽ Viv Anderson
The first Black footballer to earn a senior England cap, Viv helped pave the way for generations of Black footballers to represent their country.
