What stops women cycling more?

For some, it is safety.
For some, it is confidence.
For some, it is not having the right bike.
For some, it is not knowing the routes.
For some, it is childcare, time, storage, clothing or cost.

There is no single barrier, so there is no single solution.

We want to hear from women in Milton Keynes.

“Council says it wants redway maintenance to be in parallel to highway maintenance”.

Ann Shrimpton, Cycling Citizens MK Co Chair attended the Milton Keynes Council on Wednesday 23 to ask the Council if they will ensure that regular maintenance and higher priority is given to reported issues on the redway network particularly in relation to lighting vegetation and cleansing.

We know that fear of safety is a major barrier to more redway use. We need good bright lighting and lights repaired when reported, we need vegetation cut back to redway standards, we need regular cleansing.

This is a real issue of inequality and injustice, women and people with disabilities are disproportionally disadvantaged and that is simply, not right.

Cllr Kerrie Bradburn the Cabinet member for Environment, Waste, Highways & Transport responded.

Cllr Bradburn recognised the issues being raised and commented that the redway network is a key part of our travel infrastructure & importantly she would like to see maintenance of the redway network in parallel with maintenance of the highway network.

Cllr Bradburn asked for any particular issues to be brought to the council’s attention. The MK Cycle Forum which is part of the Alliance is working with the council to report issues of concern on some of the main networks. But we know that the issues are more widespread.

Fear of dark or isolated redways with overgrown vegetation is a real barrier to people, especially women, cycling after the dark. You can show your support for this important issue by attending our Glow Ride on 22 October to which all Councillors were invited.

Cllr Bradburn confirmed that she would be attending the Ride to show her support for the cause.

Milton Keynes City Council is running another FREE Bikeability Instructor Training Course this October, offering a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about cycling to turn that enthusiasm into a rewarding role.

As a Bikeability Instructor, you’ll help children and young people develop the skills, confidence and road awareness they need to cycle safely and independently. 🚴

📅 Course dates: 12, 13 & 15 October 2026
📍 Milton Keynes
💷 Training is completely FREE

Once qualified, there will also be opportunities to join Milton Keynes City Council’s Bikeability team, which was named Large Organisation of the Year 2026 by the Bikeability Trust. 🏆

At Cycling Citizens MK, we want to see more young people given the confidence and skills to choose cycling, and great instructors are a huge part of making that happen.
