This effect is always tricky to match! End up having to go a bit darker to cover it up but has worked pretty well! The spraying through glass trick plus going quite thin on the colours for control on the shading really helps! The first attempt was horrendous!

Definitely undervalued this one in more ways than one! Took significantly longer than I thought and definitely didn’t charge enough.
Looking back, I probably did more than I should have and went further than I needed to, but I’d take that any day over looking back and wishing I’d done more.

Couple of paint chips to touch up today but turned into a near full re polish on the bottom! A quick touch up doesn’t exist if you want to do the best job you can!

I originally quoted this as a quick respray because it looked like nothing more than a small scratch, I was way wrong on this one. Looking back, there were clear signs I should have picked up on that it was a failed previous repair. The amount of respray suggested a very small patch job. Overspray on the white that hadn’t been taped or cleaned back properly.
And a finish that hadn’t been fully polished. Small things, but together they tell a bigger story. You do anything like you do everything. You can tell a lot about a repair from the final finish.

Polishing is a great tool to have in your arsenal; it can honestly make or break a board!

Personally, I think this board without a polish is ok, average at best. But once you polish it, it really takes it to another level. The colours just come alive, and the whole board has a lot more depth to it.

That said, polishing isn’t a fix-all approach. With some lighter, more pastel colours, I actually prefer a matte finish. I don’t think polishing makes them any better; sometimes I think it can even make them worse.

It’s a great little subtle effect, and it’s something the big names use too. You’ll often see them polish the rails to make the board really pop when it’s sitting in the rack, while leaving the deck and bottom matte.

It’s difficult to do properly and very time-consuming; there are no shortcuts, but it’s always worth it in the end! 🤙

Most repairs ultimately fail because of one thing: not enough glass. That can happen because you didn’t put enough glass on in the first place, or because you sanded too much of it away. I see a lot of repair videos where people put a tiny amount of glass over the repair, barely covering the edges. Then they sand it flat. The problem is that once you’ve sanded that glass away, there may be very little reinforcement left where you actually need it, along the edges of the repair. You can end up with most of the remaining glass sitting in the middle of the Q-cell, which ironically is the strongest part of the repair and doesn’t need as much reinforcement. The tricky part is that once everything is sanded flat, it’s very difficult to know exactly how much glass you have left. And just because you can see the weave doesn’t mean there’s no glass there. It means you’ve sanded into the fiberglass. At that point, you could have most of the cloth still intact, or you could have sanded almost all of it away. There’s no reliable visual indicator telling you exactly how much reinforcement is left. The solution is simple: put on enough glass to allow you to sand a smooth taper without removing the majority of the reinforcement. The glass right around the edges of the actual ding should barely be touched by the sander. That’s where the fiberglass is doing the most important work. Don’t skimp on the glass, and don’t sand the strength out of the repair.

Polishing this marble tint today! It was a no-brainer that this board needed a polish! Dark colours, polished, always look so much better, so much more pop!

Little surf rescue board repair today! What should have been a fairly quick and straightforward handle replacement turned into repairing a large delamination and replacing two handles instead of one. The original damage had been used for a while before it came in, allowing water to get in and the surrounding laminate to lift. By the time I stripped everything back, there was far more damage than what was visible on the surface. A good reminder that if you spot damage on your board, it's usually worth getting it repaired sooner rather than later. Small repairs have a habit of becoming much bigger ones when they're left too long.

This is actually way worse than I first thought. While reviewing the video, I realised the fin box probably hadn't been replaced at all. It looks like it'd been pushed into the board and simply glassed over... which is so much worse. Now you've got two problems. Not only are you more likely to lose a fin because the depth is wrong, but there's also a good chance the fin box will fail completely because the damage underneath was never repaired. When a fin box gets pushed into the board, the crack you see on the surface is usually just a symptom of what's happened underneath. It's very tempting to simply patch the crack and make the board look good again, but that only fixes the surface. The structure supporting the fin box is still damaged, and the repair will always fail. Ask me how I know…
