I once went blind in the Sahara Desert!🐫
Entirely my own fault.
Years ago…
Young✔️
Stupid✔️
Completely convinced I was invincible✔️
I was on holiday in Tunisia with friends.
As you can imagine…
There was drinking. Alot of it.
And in one moment of absolute genius, we booked a 2-3 day excursion to the Sahara Desert.
5am coach pickup.
Sensational idea.
There was just one issue.
The night before…
We went clubbing! Of course.
Got back to the hotel after 4am.
No sleep.
No food.
Plenty of alcohol.
Grabbed our clothes.
Jumped straight onto a coach.
Tiny bottle of water between us.
No air conditioning.
40+ degree heat.
What could possibly go wrong⁉️
After a few hours…
My vision disappeared.
Completely.
In the words of Ron Burgundy ‘I’m Blind”
For about 40 minutes.
Not dramatic.
Not metaphorical.
Actually blind!
My body basically said:
“Enough. I’m out.”
Apparently, as we arrived at the colosseum where Gladiator was filmed…
My vision slowly started returning.
I stood up.
Walked off the coach.
Still half delirious.
Straight into a busy street where locals instantly descended trying to sell things and grab my attention.
Absolute carnage.
But wait.
It gets better.
A day later…
While on the same trip…
I got my foot caught in an octopus trap underwater.
Managed to drag the weight up with me.
Blood everywhere.
Like I said…
Young.
Stupid.
Invincible.
Or so I thought.
Funny story now.
Less than funny at the time!
👉But here’s the lesson:
Your body keeps score.
You can ignore sleep.
Ignore hydration.
Ignore nutrition.
Ignore recovery.
And when you’re younger⁉️
Sometimes you get away with it.
Sometimes.
But eventually⁉️
The bill arrives!
The reason I take health seriously now isn’t because I’ve become boring.
It’s because I’ve learned the hard way that your body is not indestructible.
Hydration matters.
Sleep matters.
Resistance training matters.
Fuel matters.
Recovery matters.
Because high performance doesn’t come from running yourself into the ground.
