Gregson Lane Junior Cricket Club

Now that the league is over our juniors can enjoy some friendly matches over the summer.

Their first one this week didn’t go quite to plan as the lovely weather we’ve been having decided to disappear. The children persevered through the drizzle, batting well when it was hard to see the ball. They also did well in the conditions as the rain got heavier. There was still a few overs to go when the umpires decided it was time to halt the game so we’re calling this one a draw!

Well done to the whole team for continuing to try their hardest in conditions that were less than ideal!

The league might be over but our juniors are still keen to play cricket.

Tuesday night saw them in action in a friendly with Mia and Niamh playing their 3rd match in 3 days and Harith and Oscar making it 2 for 2.

The team (with boundary support from other juniors who weren’t playing) played really well, all achieving some great cricketing moments.

Player of the Match went to Petra for taking a great bowling wicket leading to a great team celebration.

It was lovely to see the team encouraging each other, particularly towards the end when the score was neck and neck. In spite of a great wicket from Eddie I in the final over the team finished just one point behind the visitors but as always they still ended the game with smiles on their faces.

Monday night was the final league match for our juniors.

Unfortunately they were up against the team who were top of the league so a win was unlikely but we didn’t make it easy for them!

We scored 94 and lost just 4 wickets when opening the batting. When fielding we took 5 wickets with some improved bowling but unfortunately a few too many balls made it over the boundary.

In spite of this we’re really proud of how the team have improved over the season and it’s good to see them still enjoying themselves.

Player of the Match went to Zac for a great batting performance.

Well done to all our juniors in their first season playing in a league.

Our juniors were in action on Sunday morning away from home against an extremely strong side.

Every player showed improvement in areas that we have been working on in training which is what we want to see.

Monday saw our junior team in action away from home and our first win of the season! 👏🏻

In to bat first the team got off to a good start scoring 11 runs in the first over! They continued to score well and only lost 3 wickets.

When fielding, the team was focused and energetic making some good stops. The bowling was much improved with 3 different players taking wickets, 5 in total.

Player of the Match, voted by teammates, went to James for his strong batting and bowling but congratulations to the whole team for their performance.

Another perfect evening for a game of junior cricket on Friday night.

Our team got off to a great start taking a couple of early wickets, 6 in total, and putting them in a good position after the first innings.

Unfortunately the opposition came out strong and in spite of achieving the higher number of runs, with some confident batting performances, our team conceded a greater number of wickets.

Player of the Match went to Max for his influential display with the bat and ball.

Just 2 more games to go!

Although a win still eludes our juniors we’re continuing to see improvement throughout the team.

This week’s match got off to a good start with POTM Jack getting 2 wickets in his first over but unfortunately a lot of bowling extras and a stronger batting performance from the other team meant the win was out of reach.

But as always the team ended the game smiling and it’s great to see them slowly improving and not losing confidence against more experienced teams.

Just a few more games to go this season!

It was a heavy loss for our juniors at Thursday’s match against an experienced team with a few years playing under their belts.

As always our team tried their hardest and they ended the game with smiles on their faces.

Player of the Match went to Cassell who, in spite of a whack to the hand early on, came back out to finish his batting strong. Well done!

A tough game on Monday for our juniors. There was some good fielding but in the bowling they gave away too many extras and unfortunately not enough runs were achieved off the bat.

But the team took 5 wickets including 2 for Player of the Match Petra and they always end the match smiling. Well done.

Unfortunately Tuesday’s away match was cancelled last minute due to the rain- with the promised clear sky at 6pm only lasting a couple of minutes! But the team are back in action later in the week. 🏏

Our junior teams had two home games this week.

The hot weather made it hard work for both games and Tuesday saw the team fall short in both batting and fielding but they didn’t let it get them down and they saved some energy for a post match water fight!

Player of the Match went to Eddie W who showed improvement in his bowling and put in a good display with the bat.

Thursday was another hot one and whilst the game didn’t go our way there was some good effort in the field with 6 wickets taken and much more accurate bowling from the whole team. The batting didn’t quite give us enough runs to win but saw our highest total so far with all pairs adding to the total.

Player of the Match went to Freddie who took on the role of wicket keeper bravely and got an impressive run out. The team had another well deserved water fight at the end!
