Super 6s v Yateley – Saturday 5th September
And it came to pass that the people in sky and navy were able to come out of their long hibernation and the day finally arrived for friendly combat at home for most of the RHC Ladies sides. The sun decided to mark this momentous occasion and, lo, the Super 6’s were super excited to take on Yateley on SLS. Covid-19 aware and all hand gelled up, the team dutifully obeyed all the rules; a socially distanced warm up, the ghost buster job done, no dug outs for us and the spacing of bags 2m apart along the fence (which almost took us down to Twyford. Then we got down to the serious business of making up for lost hockey time. Despite valiant efforts from Legs Liz and Typhoon Tam the team found themselves a curious 2-0 down at half time. We had surprised ourselves after such a long break and felt we had played OK. Fuelled by meticulously hygienic and socially distanced delivery of jelly babies, with wise words from Manager Liv and with the prospect of playing downhill ahead, the game took a completely different turn in the second half. Bingo – pretty soon we had levelled the score, including a stonker of a short corner strike from Sandy. Annoyingly Yateley found the back of the net once more, but we were not to be deterred. With some super passing we had levelled yet again. Who knew? With even fiercer determination, a wonderful combination of moves secured us the win with another classy field goal in the dying minutes of the game. Two of our team not realising we had won 4-3 did not dampen our excitement for a cracking first win of the season. Long may this last. Really well played everyone, including our lovely opposition. Thank you to those who stood down this week and to those who eagerly came to support. No shouting, cheers, handshakes or hugs, no stick tapping, no teas, no player of the match voting or any social niceties these days, but…. we’re back and it feels good!
Great afternoon back with all you lovely people. See you all soon 😊
Don’t forget Tuesday team will be at the club again tmrw morning from about 9.30, bring your gardening tools and come and join in. Weather looks great too 🌿🍃☀️🏑

To sell:
4 tickets (2 adult / 2 U18) plus all day car parking for the final FIH Pro League matches this Sunday 23rd June. Tickets are in the sold out East Stand (side view).
This is a double header with both the Men’s and Ladies GB teams in action vs NZ.
These matches are being played at Twickenham Stoop for the first time where a pitch is being laid and seems to be an EH focus for a fun day.
It’s a great family day out with opportunities for selfies with your hockey heroes and to go on the pitch at the end and play.
Sadly a family commitment now means we can’t go.
Tickets cost £118 but I'm open to sensible offers!
Hello all, Rogues are playing a hockey game tonight in Henley at 7pm - unfortunately we do not have a goalie, anyone able to help us please?
After speaking to lots of you last night (which im sure you all remember 😜) this is a shameless plug for sponsorship 👍
I am running the London Marathon 2 weeks today for a childrens hospital charity based at the John Radcliffe. It is for a great cause so if you can please sponsor me on the link below - thank you!!
A set of keys has been found on Sonning Lane Sand. If you have lost them, I have them on the sand pitch. Will come to the clubhouse after the L3’s match.

Here are this weekends fixtures!!! 🏑

Reading Hockey Club boasts a fantastic Vets Section.
We are very well represented in the upcoming Master's World Cups to be held over the first two weeks of October in Tokyo and Cape Town.

In Tokyo we have
• Peter Havlin – Wales Over 70s
• Fergus Stapleton – Ireland Over 60s
• Mike Pell – England Over 60s
• Mark Boothroyd – England Over 60s
Peter Wright and Alan Wade were due to play in Tokyo, but their age groups decided not to attend as much of Tokyo is still shut down.

In Cape Town, we have
• Dave Oatley – England Over 50s
• Roger Wall – England Over 55s
• Ian Philips – England Over 55s
• Gary Stoneley – England Over 55s
• Richard Adams – England Over 55s

We also have one representative from the women’s section. Jude Ross will be in Cape Town, representing England Over 55s. In a welcome distraction from packing Jude said: “I’m really excited and proud to be representing England Masters O55s this year at the World Cup in South Africa! It’s an honour to represent my country and a fantastic opportunity, thanks for all the love and support.”

What a fantastic showing from the Club, but for the 3 men’s Vets sides, a logistical selection nightmare for the next couple of weeks!

Back in August Emma Thomas was a key player in England Over 35s gold medal in their world cup, held in (exotic) Nottingham. ET and her team were ably supported by manager Sharron Boccaccini and Assistant Coach Zoe Yates. We wish ET a speedy recovery for the ‘knock’ she took from the Irish in the final. Ian Anderson was also in Nottingham, representing Wales Over 35s.

Wishing our players all the best for their upcoming World Cup competitions, we look forward to hearing all about it on your return.

Anyone looking for updates during the tournament could try for the schedule, team info and match updates and the public Facebook group , which will no doubt be kept up to date with the competition news.

In light of the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, all training and hockey activities are cancelled this evening.

Further update will be provided tomorrow, but this evening our thoughts are with the Royal Family.

Scott, Billy and Ben were accepted into the EH DISE programme at the start of the academic year. They attended 4 camps at Lilleshall National Sports Centre where all attendees were put into 3 groups, Red, White and Blue.

Coursework entailed nutrition, psychology, behaviours & values, injuries, careers, lifestyle, drugs, finance, health and safety & communications.

The final camp was a tournament between the teams and EHU16 boys. Scott and Billy were in the white team that won all their matches, finishing with a 3-0 win against the EH boys. Completion also gives them extra UCAS points for Uni.

Well done to this lot (plus Bella who disappeared before the photo call) playing for Reading Performance Centre in the Challenge Cup U17 this weekend.

Matt W and Cameron M were selected as part of the Wales U18 squad for their 10 day Erasmus Tour in the Netherlands earlier this month. They won all 4 of their matches and had lots of training sessions as well as some off-pitch team bonding time. A great experience for them both.

Do you have any hockey news for us to share? Please send details, and if you can, a photo (if possible - with permission from the photographer to use on RHC social media) to [email protected]

Breaking news ❗️🔇

We are delighted to announce the signing of GB and England rising star Lizzie Neal ahead of the 2022-23 season!

“Really excited to join Reading Hockey Club and be part of a strong and talented squad and a great club environment. I am really looking forward to next season and can’t wait to get started with the team”

💙 Welcome to Reading Lizzie 💙

Our ladies 2s will be playing in the National League Conference West next season after a wonderfully successful 21/22.

After facing the threat relegation in recent years, the 2s have shown an exceptional turn of pace and cannot wait to compete at national league level next season and for many seasons to come!

Back in September, the 2s welcomed both new and familiar faces alike to the team. Notable welcomes go to Bryony Woods, Sophie Pettegree and Annabel Dalby, Frank (Becky Loonan) & Maddie Scott. Thank you also for bringing up the average age and welcome also to our U18 contingent who keep us young at heart!

At the beginning of the season, we set ourselves the goal of finishing the season in the top half of the table. At Christmas, having only lost one game (to eventual league winners Oxford Hawks 2s) and with a couple of goal fests under our belt, it became clear we needed to re-assess, and in a very positive way.

We remained in a ‘Top of The Table Battle' till the final whistle of the final game; and in the end we finished 2nd in the table on 52 points with 16 wins, 4 draws and just 2 losses.

Oxford Hawks 1s finished 3rd in the NL Conference West and this meant that our league winners, Oxford Hawks 2s, could not be promoted to join them. After a flurry of emails and studying of the EH league rules, it was confirmed that the 2nd placing team would be promoted - that’s us!!

It’s not all been plain sailing, the cookie doesn’t always crumble sky-navy-sky. Nonetheless, the 2s are nothing if not a tenacious bunch. More than once taking a couple of years off Chris (and Bryony), we do love a game of 2 halves!

I would personally like to say a huge thank you to the commitment the team has shown. The girls are such a kind and friendly bunch, with a good helping of competitiveness in all the right ways. It’s been an absolute pleasure to captain the team! Also a huge thank you to Sammy for her vice-captainship & warm-up expertise.

I know the entire team would like to join me in thanking Chris, we really couldn’t have done it without you! One last thank you to Brian Cox (not the physicist!) and his wise words. Brian kindly stepped in on match days when Covid struck Chris down.

Finally, and sadly, a farewell to those who leave Reading Hockey Club at the end of the season. Longy (Jess Long), Dunners (Georgia Dunlop) & Georgia Hector, we will miss you loads!

Bring on next season!
