Working in a little barn is like being in a sauna by the end of the day! 🥵😅

Our little listed barn salon is full of charm, but with its tiny windows and beautiful wooden structure, it can get rather warm during the summer months. ☀️

To help everyone stay comfortable, we’ve got our cooling fan and humidifier working away, and we’re treating all of our lovely clients to a refreshing ice lolly while you sit back, relax and enjoy a little moment of self-care. 🍦💚

And that’s not all… every hair wash comes with a cooling shampoo too! ❄️

Not only does it leave your scalp feeling wonderfully refreshed, but it also helps to close the hair cuticle, locking in your colour, sealing in moisture and allowing your treatments to work even better. Your hair (and you!) will leave feeling cooler, shinier and happier. 🥰

Sustainability isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we actively invest in every day.

As a sustainable salon, we take responsibility for the waste we produce and pay to ensure our hair, aluminium foil and plastics are recycled through the correct channels rather than ending up in landfill.

Hair ✂️
Did you know that cut hair can have a second life? It can be transformed into oil-absorbing mats and booms to help clean up spills, compost and natural fertiliser for gardens, and even sustainable alternatives to wool. One of my farming clients even uses hair around his rose bushes to help deter deer from eating them!

Aluminium foil ✨
Salon foil is highly recyclable. Once recycled, it can be turned into new packaging, beverage cans, car and engine components, and building materials. Recycling aluminium also uses around 95% less energy than producing new aluminium from raw materials, making it one of the most environmentally friendly materials to recycle.

Plastic 🌿
We mainly use recycled and kerbside recyclable plastics wherever possible, helping these materials be transformed into new packaging and other useful products instead of becoming waste.

Every small decision matters.

That’s why we’ve also decided that, once our current stock of paper bags has been used, we will no longer offer disposable bags. Instead, we stock beautiful cotton and hessian bags made from natural fibres, designed to be reused time and time again before eventually biodegrading naturally.

We know we aren’t perfect, but we’re committed to making better choices wherever we can. Looking after our planet is a journey, and we’re proud to play our part, one appointment, one client and one sustainable decision at a time. 🌍💚

Hi, I’m Brooke, and I’m 15 years old. I’m currently doing my work experience at Hair by Carla.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading books and practising new skills. When I’m older, I’m considering a career in either hairdressing or nursing, as I love helping people and learning new things.

I’m a kind, friendly person who’s always happy to have a chat and get to know new people. I’m really enjoying my time at the salon and looking forward to gaining lots of new skills and experience.

It’s always so exciting to welcome a young person into the salon! ✨

We love sharing our knowledge, inspiring the next generation, and showing that hairdressing can be done in a healthier, more sustainable way. From using low-tox colours to embracing natural and organic products wherever possible, we’re passionate about educating future professionals to care for both people and the planet.

One of the most rewarding parts of offering work experience is seeing confidence grow. Every young person deserves the chance to learn, develop new skills, and discover whether this industry is the right fit for them.

We know that finding a work placement isn’t always easy, so we’re proud to open our doors and offer that opportunity. It was such a pleasure having Claire Ellis Facial & Massage Therapy in my chair. 🥰

We spent most of the appointment chatting, sharing our experiences of being self-employed and comparing notes on creating a truly holistic experience for our clients. It was so refreshing to meet someone who shares the same values and mindset.

Our approach to hair and beauty is centred around wellness, healing and working in harmony with nature. We both believe in using organic, natural, vegan-friendly and cruelty-free products because we genuinely care, not only about our clients, but also about the wellbeing of our beautiful planet. 🙌🏽🌿

Claire has created a beautiful treatment space next to her home, where she offers ethical and holistic beauty treatments. She has even taken things a step further by creating her own natural skincare products, which is incredibly inspiring. 🙌🏽

Like me, Claire is a busy bee, so the earliest appointment I could get is at the beginning of August and I honestly can’t wait! We chatted about one of her new treatments, which includes a luxurious back facial, and I’m so excited to experience it. 😍
