Strong and Steady FAQs

I get it's scary for older people to come along to an exercise class, especially if they have medical or health things going on and have never really "done" physical activity.

I'm always happy to chat to people before starting the class to reassure them and answer any questions they have. They are also welcome to just come down and meet everyone and see how the class works (people always end up joining in though!)

The class is really friendly and non judgemental, you don't have to wear any special kit. Just something that you are comfortable moving in and shoes that attach to your feet with laces or velcro.

You don't need to have any previous exercise experience. I show you how to do the exercises and will keep an eye on you through the class.

I am qualified in cardiac rehab, cancer rehab, exercise referral (which covers multiple health conditions) and I have a master's degree in sports therapy so I can advise on any niggles.

At the first session I will get them to complete a health questionnaire and go through any specific needs or worries they have.

I'm never going to ask anyone to do anything they aren't comfortable with, we start off gently and build up gradually.

I can adapt the exercises to suit everyone. Some people sit down, some people use heavier weights, some no weights. Some people sit some exercises out.

Most important is that we do have a laugh. It's a fun, laid back session with the current gang going for a coffee together afterwards.

This time of the year, a lot of my clients ask me for "homework", something they can do on holiday so they can stay active and not miss out on any workouts.

My advice is always the same. Please go rest, enjoy the time with your family, and don't do any workouts.

A few weeks off isn't going to undo your progress. In fact, it might actually benefit you. Having some time off and moving slightly differently gives your joints, nervous system, and brain a complete rest. A few weeks off plan can sometimes just be the thing you need to get on top of those little niggly bits you keep fighting!

So my advice to all of you this summer, go enjoy the break, eat the good food (all of it!), make memories, and trust the work you’ve already put in. The weights will be right where you left them when you get back. 💪

Be honest, are you packing the kettlebells and resistance bands this summer? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

You have been consistent with your training which means you have done the hard work! You have built up strength and fitness and now you get to go have fun and put that all to good use. Go do the fun things!!

Usually being on holiday offers us more ways to move than we would have available to us at home. More steps exploring new places or being more active in a way to keep the kids entertained. Just because it's not a session logged on Strava doesn't mean it's not valuable.

Our bodies need time off. We can't keep pushing our body systems to the point of failure because it will just break. If you have lots of niggles or injuries this is especially important. Let things settle, you might even find that you can do more when you return back to training after a break.

For those that are still feeling guilty for being out of routine and not training. Think of it as shifting your focus for a few weeks. Focus on your sleep patterns as much as you would do your sessions. Aim to always wake up at the same time rather than going to sleep at the same time!

This is your life. Go have fun, spend time reconnecting with your people, eat the food, relax.

Enjoy. ☀️
