This World Mental Health Day, the theme is lived experiences heard: real voices, real change. We’re amplifying Tobias’ story, highlighting the power of listening to young people.
Growing up, Tobias was doing well at school. Teachers saw a bright, hardworking young person with a real talent for maths. But behind the good grades, he was struggling.
For years, Tobias masked what he was going through. The signs were there, but they weren't joined up. It all got too much and he experienced a serious mental health crisis.
As Tobias says:
"Just because young people are doing well academically doesn't mean the world isn't crumbling on the inside. If someone had realised sooner and I had been able to understand myself… I wouldn’t have needed years of therapy and medication.”"
When Tobias was finally diagnosed as autistic and connected with the right support, everything changed. Having someone who listened, understood and took action helped him move forward.
Today, Tobias is a medical student and disability advocate, using his experiences to help create a better future for other disabled children and young people.
Tobias' story is a powerful reminder that early support matters and listening to lived experience isn't just important; it can change lives.
No child should have to reach crisis before they get the support they need.
