Mindfulness, Like a Cat Catching a Mouse
The cat represents our ever-present awareness, observing twenty-four hours a day. The mouse is like the countless thoughts that come and go. Whenever the “mouse” appears, the “cat” notices it immediately and brings it into awareness.
When we simply observe in silence, thoughts can be noticed as soon as they arise, rather than unconsciously carrying us away.
Today’s meditation class was mainly an opportunity for everyone to explore the roots of their thoughts. After the class, a few students smiled and said, “That’s strange. It seemed as though hardly any thoughts arose today.”
With regular meditation practice, our ability to observe becomes increasingly sharp—quick and agile, just like a cat.
Gradually, when those thoughts that are as active as monkeys can learn to arise and function according to our needs, coming and going freely, our lives will also become more relaxed, spacious, and at ease.
