Yama (禁制)、Niyama(勸制) 、Asana(體位法)、Pranayama (調息法)、Pratyahara (制感)、Dharana (專注)、Dhyana (冥想)、Samadhayah(三摩地)是瑜珈八支的修習之路,禁制和勸制被傳統與傳承所規定,修習者應在瑜伽修習中持續不斷地奉行。
雖然體位法、調息、制感是獨立的分支,但它們相互依存,共同傳達瑜伽隱含的方面。
這八支能夠幫助追求者提升瑜伽技藝,被稱為「漸進的修習」。
通過它們,我們達到越來越高的境界。前五支是個人努力,以達到意識的進化,而專注、冥想、三摩地是瑜伽的普遍展示或自然狀態。
瑜珈八支
1.Yama(禁制)
不傷害,不說謊、不偷盜,不縱慾,不貪婪
帕坦伽利:禁制是強大的通用誓戒。
*如果修習者堅持不傷害原則,那麼周圍的一切存在者都會放棄敵對反應。
*不說謊之人言必果。
*不偷盜之人被給予各種財富。
*不縱慾之人(堅貞者、獨身者)的精力、活力、能量和靈性知識如同小河流淌。
*不貪婪之人將知曉前世和來生。
2.勸制(niyama)
潔淨,滿足、苦行,自我研習、將自我交託給神。
*潔淨有兩種、即內在與外在的。每日沐浴為外在的潔淨,體式和調息則從內部潔淨。它們幫助人淨化自己的思想、言語和行動。
*滿足帶來一種快樂與善意的狀態
*苦行是包含淨化、自我訓練和嚴格修習的一種強烈的努力。
苦行清洗和淨化身體、感官和心意。
*自我研習以對不朽的內部存在的認識照亮修習者。
*臣服于神將內部存在帶到創造者至上神那裡。
3.體位法(asana)
體式指姿勢,即整個身體的擺放,這關係到心意和靈魂。
"安住於姿勢"指發現並保持一個姿勢的完美,並在此完美的姿勢中以智性的洞察力和專注來反思。當體式中費勁的努力變成毫不費力時,練習者就掌握了該體式。通過這種方式,當練習體式時,必須放鬆腦細胞,活化重要器官的細胞以及身體結構與骨骼的細胞,那麽智性和意識可以延伸到每一個細胞中。
在體式中,努力,專注與平衡的結合迫使我們認真的活在當下。
4.pranayama(調息法)
是對吸氣、吐氣、屏息的控制、只有在體式達到完美時才適合練習調息。
調息練習移除遮蔽知識之光的無名面紗,讓心意成為適合的工具來進行冥想,以視見靈魂。
5.pratyahara(制感)
從與外部對象的接觸中收回感官、心意與意識,隨後在將它們向後收回觀者,淨化我們的心意與感官。
6.dharana (專注)
將意識固定於一個點或一個地方。
7.dhyana (冥想)
注意力穩定而持續地流向同一個點或同一個地方、就是冥想。
8.samadhayah(三摩地)
當冥想對象吞沒冥想者,顯現為主體時,自我意識便消失了。這就是三摩地。
瑜伽八支包括禁制(Yama)和勸制(Niyama)。這些戒律將行動器官和感覺器官的能量導向正確的方向。
體式有兩個方面,姿勢與安住。「安住於姿勢」指發現並保持一個姿勢的完美,並在完美的姿勢中以智性的洞察力和專注來反思。體式帶來平衡,心意的平靜,以及穿透智性的力量。
調息(通過心意控制吸氣、呼氣和屏息進入規律有節奏的模式)和制感(感官的撤退)幫助修習者探索他隱密的方面,並使他得以洞察他的存在核心。
專注、冥想和三摩地是瑜伽規訓的實現,是瑜伽的要素或自然成分。它們於其餘五支被掌握時發展出來。實際上這八支交織在一起,形成瑜伽這無縫隙的整體。

Dear students,
You may or may not be aware, Yogaśālā has been open for 15 years. Each of our teachers tries their own best to share the transformative experience of practicing Iyengar Yoga.
From our recent observations & conversations with students, we are aware that they are ready and interested in knowing more about Iyengar Yoga from a philosophical point of view. Our Guruji, B.K.S. Iyenger said, “Yoga is science, philosophy and art”. To further understand and put into practice, we are thrilled to let you know that we are going to start a book club from June, on every Saturday, from 2:30 - 3pm. The first book we are going to read together is “Light on Life”.
“Light on Life” is for all levels of students who want to know how to apply the practice on the mat to their lives. It also shows us the blending of the 8 limbs of yoga as petals of a flower that leads us to understand each limb is equally important. Moreover, the chapters in the book are laid out according to the shelters of our body, which give us a clearer picture of how Yoga practice can integrate our body, mind, and breathing profoundly.

Her mental health issues led her to study psychology. Now she’s a counsellor Opal Li, who suffered from depression and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, learned to manage her mental health issues with meditation and yoga, before studying psychology and becoming a counsellor.

Bopanna attributed yoga, which he started practising during the Covid-19 pandemic, as helping improve his tennis in recent years.
“[It] always was there in India, but I never really tried it. I just thought it was something I wouldn’t enjoy so much,” said Bopanna.
But with a local studio near his home, Bopanna tried Iyengar yoga, which he practiced four times a week for 90 minutes.
“That actually tremendously made a huge, huge difference … yoga in a way not only strengthens my legs, my body, but also I think made me calmer on the tennis court,” explained Bopanna, adding that his focus has improved.

Dr. Geeta Iyengar was the eldest daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar and a yoga pioneer in her own right. She studied under her father and began teaching at the Iyengar Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India when Guruji would travel to teach internationally. She went on to teach at Iyengar yoga conferences worldwide herself, and co-directed RIMYI along with her brother Prashant after their father's retirement in 1984. Geeta further distinguished herself by becoming a doctor of both philosophy and ayurvedic medicine. "I am not in my father's shadow, but in his light."🕉
