Most riders pick a jump saddle by feel alone. These three tips help you choose, fit, and care for one with a bit more intention.

1. Flap angle changes your position.
A forward-cut flap suits shorter stirrups and a more closed hip angle. A straighter flap gives more leg contact if you cross over into flatwork. Before you decide, check where your knee sits naturally against the flap.

2. Tree width matters more than seat size.
Seat size fits the rider. Tree width (the shape at the front of the saddle that sits over the horse's shoulders) fits the horse. Always confirm the tree width first, before anything else.

3. Look after the leather through winter.
Cold and damp dry leather out faster than summer riding does. A light conditioning after each wet ride, and a clean before storage, keeps panels and flaps from cracking.
