What chalk companies don’t tell you ⬇️

Most gymnastics chalk wasn’t designed for leather grips.

With traditional chalk, gymnasts usually add water just to help the chalk stick to their grips. But mix water with magnesium carbonate and you create a paste-like layer that feels slick on the bar (or as gymnasts call it, goop). That’s why most chalk formulas rely on added ingredients like silica and rosin to create a temporary grippy sensation. But long-term, high exposure to silica has been linked to respiratory issues…

As the drying agents evaporate the moisture, much of the chalk disappears too, forcing athletes to re-chalk turn after turn.

Did you know the chalk you’re breathing in every day for hours on end in the gym could silently be affecting your lungs? Almost all chalk currently being used in gymnastics is professional grade and imported. That means it may contain ingredients that aren’t regulated such as silica, limestone, etc. Long-term, high-level exposure to chemicals like silica has been linked to respiratory issues.
