RMTC at Harvard Gultch Track to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the four minute mile

Homepage 05/10/2026

GROUP WORKOUTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE WEEK OF 05/11/2026

Greetings Everyone,

Thank you to Jonathon Curran (RMTC Social Events Officer) for a fantastic Bike Maintenance Clinic this past Saturday. Like anything else, the more you know, the more questions you have. Jonathon is a great resource for our club and is open to all your maintenance questions.

This week at the Tuesday evening run, we will be celebrating the 72nd anniversary of Roger Bannister’s breaking the 4-minute mile barrier, running 3:59.4. Since that 1954 feat, just over 2000 runners have broken the barrier, including 30 high schoolers. Interesting fact – from 1964 through 2019 only 10 high schoolers had gone under 4 minutes. From 2020 through 2025, 20 high schoolers have gone under 4. That might be credited to shoe technology. The male record for 1 mile is 3:43.13 and was set by Hakeem El Guerrouj in 1999. The female record was set by Faith Kipyegon in a time of 4:07.64 in 2023. A few weeks ago, Sebastian Sawe ran the London marathon (26.2 miles) in 1:59:30. To do that, he averaged 4:33.7 per mile.

To celebrate this monumental event, we’ll meet at Harvard Gulch Track (Across from the Harvard Gulch Rec Center – 550 E Iliff) at 6:00 p.m. Meeting at Harvard Gulch assures us that we have a track and matches the running conditions faced by Roger Bannister in 1954. Come prepared to run your best efforts for 1 mile, an 800, a 400 and 200. The goal is to go under 4 minutes as an individual or as a 2-person relay team, 4-person relay team or 8-person relay team. The best RMTC 8x200 relay team ran 3:43.
If you are racing the Colfax Marathon/Half Marathon on Sunday, this can be a great prep workout. Just cut your pace back to practice your long distance paces.

A note about swimming at Manual High School. The pool was not working this past Friday morning. I was told to check back about availability on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week. The sign up sheet is open, but be aware that the swim might be cancelled again.

Thanks to Coach Jeanette for leading the Sunday Morning Trail Runs. These will stop and Jeanette will be leading short Open Water Swims followed by a run on Saturday afternoons at the Chatfield Gravel Pond. Jeanette will also be starting a triathlon clinic in June. Stay posted for more details.
