No matter how much they improved the horse buggy, it wasn’t going to become an automobile.

I’ve got a good friend
Brilliant guy. Well-read. Well-traveled. Well-informed.
Almost always the smartest guy in the room
He knows more than enough about nutrition, exercise, and the science of weight loss
And yet, he’s stuck.
Every time we talk about his struggles, he circles back to all the reasons why he can’t do it
And when he does make an attempt its always the same solutions that have failed him in the past

More discipline
More exercise
Fewer calories
More willpower
The very strategies that have disappointed him time and time again
And when I suggest we explore his upstream neural drivers, his internal narrative, current influences, emotions, belief systems, perceptions, and the stories driving his behavior?

He wants a better horse
I want him to consider the automobile

Here’s the fascinating thing about human behavior
You can know exactly what to do and still struggle to do it
Because knowledge and behavior aren’t the same thing
And emotions often have a much bigger vote than intellect
We don’t always do what we know is best
We often do what feels familiar, safe, and comfortable
Even when that familiar thing is making us miserable

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t a better answer
It’s a better question
Instead of asking:
“How can I force myself to try harder?”
Try asking:
“Why do I keep returning to something that isn’t working?”
Or better yet:
“What am I so afraid of changing?”
Those questions might take you somewhere an extra workout or another calorie restriction never could
And you’ll likely get there faster......just like the modern day automobile
UNWEIGHT your life. And UNWAIT your life.
Stay well, and of strong mind and body,
