Hear ye, hear ye! The Oakland Colonels are bound for the Hawaiian Islands! But first, let’s learn some special history. 🍎📚
Today, we tip our caps to King David Kalākaua (1836–1891), Hawaiʻi’s beloved Merrie Monarch, who reigned from 1874 to 1891.
A champion of Hawaiian culture, music, and hula, King Kalākaua ruled during an era when the American pastime of base ball was taking root in the Hawaiian Kingdom.
By the 1880s, base ball had become part of island life, with clubs gathering for spirited matches in Honolulu. More than 140 years later, the Oakland Colonels are honored to celebrate this remarkable chapter of base ball history at the 2nd 2026 Kalākaua Base Ball Jubilee!

An authentic photograph from the Library of Congress. It’s later than the 1886 period that the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball (Bay Area Vintage Base Ball) & Aloha Vintage Base Ball (Aloha Vintage Base Ball Association ) leagues and the Colonels portray, but we love to honor the real baseball tradition in Hawaiʻi. 👏🌈🌴🌺⚾️

An actual team photographed in Honolulu just four years after King Kalākaua’s death (1891). Recall that our leagues play by 1886 rules, so this is very close to traveling back with us.
