Finding a clear lane gets a little harder with 22 other boats trying to do the same thing.

Puff’s crew took on 11 races over four days at the J/105 North Americans, finishing 13th overall and 5th among the local fleet with SSC head instructor and race coach Steve Summers at the helm.

The crew had been practicing every Wednesday night since March. That work showed up in sharp boat handling and close-quarters mark roundings. Steve called it the high point of his sailing year.

Back at C*C each evening, the teams gathered for dinner instead of heading their separate ways. Getting to know fellow J/105 sailors from across the country was as much a part of the week as the racing.

Congratulations to Steve, Shyah, Jeramy, JT, Nora and Brian on a strong showing for SSC!

“I wouldn’t be gone long.” Captain Barend came back 10 hours later.

He’d been sailing a little Topper on South Africa’s Berg River, so caught up in it that he hadn’t stopped to eat or drink. That was in 2003. Sailing has held his attention ever since.

Meet the newest instructor on our SSC team! Barend has been teaching since 2017, with two circumnavigations of Vancouver Island and a delivery from Hawaii among his sailing experiences.

His approach to teaching? Get students on the water and let them learn by doing. He admits he used to explain things too thoroughly, but experience taught him to give students more time to experience it themselves.

He’s now teaching ASA 101 and 103, with ASA 104 and race coaching coming soon.

And his preference for sailing singlehanded? “No one asks, ‘Are we there yet?’”

A crew full of familiar faces, heading to the J/105 North Americans!

Racing starts tomorrow, October 15, with Steve Summers at the helm of Puff. Joining him are longtime SSC members Jason, Nora, Brian and Jeramy, along with race coach Shyah.

You don’t have to buy a boat to spend more time sailing.

At Seattle Sailing Club, you can sail different boats and get a feel for what you like. That’s useful if you’re thinking about buying one someday, or just want to keep sailing without owning.

Of course, having access to a boat is only part of it. You need people to sail with, too. The club is a good place to meet them, especially when your current friends’ idea of boating is taking the ferry.

The Blake Island Campout is back! Before COVID, this was an annual club tradition, and this year we brought it back.

Saturday morning our flotilla sailed downwind to Blake Island in perfect weather. The marina was packed when we arrived, so two boats rafted up at the dock and two grabbed mooring balls around the corner. Lesson learned, rowing to shore is much harder than it looks.

After lunch we hiked the island, then gathered around the campfire for a potluck BBQ and roasted marshmallows well into the evening. A few of us dinghied back to our boats to and go to experience bioluminescence.

Sunday started calm and foggy. The fog lifted early down south, but past Elliott Bay it got thick, so we put lookouts and foghorns to work with only a few boat lengths of visibility. Everyone made it home safe just as the sun came out for a gorgeous fall afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, we're already looking forward to next year!

Nobody steps onto a sailboat for their first lesson knowing exactly what to do. Read that again. No one.

You’ll mix up port and starboard. Your first tack might be a little chaotic. You may get splashed, feel awkward and wonder if the boat is supposed to lean that far.

You don’t need to arrive knowing the language or having everything figured out. You’ll learn as you go and what the best part is your not doing it alone, we will be there for every step.

Join SSC member Jason Tyler (JT) for stories and photos from two legs of the Clipper Round the World Race. He’ll share what it was like facing heavy weather, living onboard and sailing thousands of miles with a crew made up mostly of amateur sailors.

Our Shoreside Socials are about more than the presentation. They’re a chance to meet other local sailors, find new people to sail with and get to know the SSC community. You don’t need to be a member to come!
